Music in neighbour's back garden

On this beautiful, hot and sunny day, the only thing that made me feel ok have having a pile of work to do was being able to do it in the garden.

Now neighbours have on turned on the radio in their garden, blaring music and I can't concentrate. (Small gardens, built up London terraced houses).

I completely know she's entitled to fun in her back garden on a beautiful day and I'm probably being unreasonable. But I'd like to know if you think IBU to be pissed off and WIBU to say something (polite).

Music and smoke don't tend to stay in their own gardens which is why both annoy me when people are inconsiderate and impose them on me. I don't think there's anything wrong with some low music but I'm quite grumpy about having to listen to other people's loud music...and even more grumpy about smoke.

Our neighbours are guilty of both smoke and noise pollution.

Yanbu - but not sure how to approach unless you say you have a headache or something, could they turn it down a bit?

Loads of people will just come along to say that's part of life and you just need to deal with it, but it seems such a shame that loud and obnoxious people get their way all the time.

Meanwhile someone's set a bonfire going near our house and it STINKS. All windows rapidly closed but that's not fun in this heat.

Hm, thanks. I feel less I reasonable now. Still don't know if I'm brave enough to say anything. Not long ago I asked her to turn off an incredibly loud patio cleaner for 20 mins when DP and I were having dinner in the back garden and it was more or less the only time we had together that week.

Even if your neighbour turns her music down, with such small/close gardens, you'll still probably be able to hear it - and feel aggravated.

Would it help if you put in earbuds and listened to something of your own choosing?

My neighbours have just lit a bonfire their bbq using old painted wood. Toxic doesn't begin to describe it. Every bloody fine evening it's lit.
It's stinking my house out and a friend 8 doors away has phoned to ask who the hell is it.
I daren't say anything because I'd get very angry - they did it two days ago when we were out and the washing on the line and whole house stank. When DH said something they just laughed....

Our neighbours had some music on today, we could barely hear it. If it was full on and really disturbing I'd probably politely ask if they could turn it down a tiny bit (but not off as that would be unreasonable)

Depends what music they are playing.

Yesterday evening I was out the back having a solo rave to the Old Skool music coming from a nearby house. If it had been heavy metal, however, it would have driven me insane.

Perhaps with a whistle, or a lolly, or some Vicks...

If trying to work then even quieter music will annoy you - maybe some noise definer headphones would be useful, or your own music?

Its the noise of lawnmowers and streamers we normally have disturbing the peace.

Mind, I am just feeling aggrieved as its another lovely weekend and my garden isn't ready to sit in - will be another week or two before it is and I am worried we will have had our summer by then!

How long can a patio cleaner (not sure what that is tbh) take to clean a patio in a small London terraced garden?

YANBU, though usually on these threads you tend to be told you are for some reason.

I see that thus far the "if I want to play fucking crap music at full blast in my garden while getting pissed then I will" lot haven't turned up. (probably getting pissed in their garden )

Headphones have been around for decades and it is beyond me why people won't use them in gardens.when they happily wander along streets using them..

Whingeing Poms. Probably. It's daytime on a weekend. If they can't enjoy a bit of music in their garden at a time such as this, when can they? If they do this for hours at a time every time the weather is decent, then that is unreasonable. Never doing what they enjoy because you don't like it is not compromise.

You can't share music and have a shared fun time in the garden with others using headphones.

Yanbu. That would really get on my nerves. I don't have a garden and when I read threads like this it reminds me that gardens are not the peaceful haven that I picture in my mind.

YANBU but I think I would prefer that to what I have to put up with. My neighbours always have their really loud children and grandchildren screaming, shouting and swearing in their garden. Climbing up my fence and hitting my trees with sticks. It is really frustrating because I don't want my children hearing it.

I've just been gardening with a bit of music on. I could hear my neighbour singing along in the next garden. I couldn't use headphones because one of the kids or OH is likely to tap me on the shoulder causing me to swear. Like fuck.

I don't think YABU for being annoyed. It's not so bad if you share the same taste in music. As I clearly do with my elderly neighbour...

To be honest, I don't think I'd mind music on its own too much. It's more that I'm grumpy because I've got to work.

On the dinner out and patio cleaning - it was a fine evening a while ago and we'd promised ourselves all day that it'd be really nice to have dinner outside. The cleaner was on for aaaaaages and sounded like sheets of metal clanging over concrete.

And it really, really is doofy-doofy-thud-thud music.

Playing music in a garden is incredibly selfish and antisocial. There is nothing worse than being forced to listen to someone else's awful taste in music.
