A DC of this age - not typical?

Just been vacuuming the livingroom and DC1 is on the iPad.

Me: What you doing Littlemonkey 1?
LM1: I am window shopping at ASDA
Me: What?
LM1: I am window shopping online for Shopkins, I have a budget of £6 in my money tin and at the moment my basket says £4.50.
Me: Riiigghhhhttt......
LM1: Can you do the week's shopping online and pay for this too? I'll give you the money......
Me: carries on vacuuming, pondering if I heard her correctly

AIBU to think that not all 7yr olds think this way? Because, despite my DD coming up with this on a regular basis, I don't think it is typical for this age...... Littlemonkey 3 is also coming up with this type of reasoning and he is only 3!!!

We don't know your children... so not really sure how to answer

But I guess if that's how you communicate at home and she sees you "window shopping" on the ipad and discussing it with partner/family. She's bound to pick up on it.

There's an 9yr old in the family who is very budget/money obsessed, always wants to know how much things cost, how much he can buy...etc.. but his mum is very flashy, shops a lot.. so I guess he just picks up the attitude towards money there.

My child does all sorts of odd/different things other kids don't do. But then I look at my partner and that answers where it came from pretty much immediately :D

My DD7 does this all the time. Amazon is where she gets her fix! -the basket. Shopkins, Little ponies, lots of other pink delights.

She knows not to actually buy them.

I don't think it is unusual, after all it is how they see us doing/paying for things.

They are typical of their generation. :)

Sounds fine to me.

When smaller dd had pocket money and birthday/Christmas money at various times. She looked at Amazon on the iPad and knew what she wanted and would see if she had enough to buy it with her money. She'd then ask if we could get it for her.

I don't think that's anything to do with anyone else being flashy or whatever.

It's no different really to going to a shop to and seeing a toy they want and working out if they can afford it. Or seeing it on a TV advert and looking at the price v money box.

Is it the term 'window shopping' perhaps? Or 'budget.' But then if that's a term used in front of them then why not?

Seems sensible to me and it's not like they're asking for something they can't afford.

Yeah, most 7 year old I would think have a good grasp of on line shopping. Remember they will have been using computers since reception/ nursery class if not before so it's second nature to them.

Mine would look in the Argos and index catalogues. Just the modern way now is online.

Yes, sounds pretty normal.

My son has an eye on his savings at all times, and won't buy anything unless he's checked it out on line first.

Stuff is always being added to various baskets, but he always does insist on handing over the money, so it's fine.

I don't think that's anything to do with anyone else being flashy or whatever. I wasn't saying her situation was. I was referring to someone else in my family who's child has an unhealthy obsession with what things cost (Wasn't worth going into great detail as it's obviously not the case with the OP's daughter)

The problem here is that for her to have got as far as putting it in the basket, it means you've left yourself signed in to the account.

So make sure she doesn't accidentally checkout or add other items by mistake.

Mine have all done this in fact dd ordered stuff (moshi monsters) off Amazon with my saved card details when she was about four Hmm.She has always been a whizz on a laptop though. She was delighted and we were too impressed to be cross tbh although I did remove my card details.

Its very normal. My daughter is 6 and been saving her pocket money for 2 weeks and I took her to Smyths last week to get her shopkins. She also asks me to buy things for her on ebay and how can she help round the house to earn extra money to buy the toys she wants. She told me last week she wants to get a job when shes older as she doesnt want to be poor and she knows she needs to work hard to buy things. I think its good work ethic and a sign of intelligence. X

Agree it's normal for this generation. DS (7) is forever 'window shopping' on Amazon. It's a different world, he's currently incredulous that his new trainers that I ordered on Tuesday still haven't arrived 2 days later, despite them coming from Germany!

My 5yo DS saves up for Lego sets but we have to go online to show them to him - he doesn't know how to put them in the basket himself. He likes to look at them all - like an online catalogue and he puts his pocket money in a tin til he's saved up enough for his chosen set. It's a good way to learn about money and budgeting.
