To not insist dd wears her braces tonight?

Dd got twin block braces today. She's struggling a bit with them, but has worn them all day. She says she can't sleep in them tonght- too much saliva. Anyway, I've told her not to worry about tonight,she can try again tomorrow when she's more used to them.

The more she wears them the quicker she will get used to them. Overnight is when they will work best too as muscles relax.

Sooner she starts to get used to them the better. and this is speaking as mother of a child who was in brace of some sort from 10-18. He has film star teeth now!!

Well as you have said it I would carry on with not wearing tonight and then start tomorrow and keep on after that. Be worth it in the end

Dangerous tactic...whilst I get it that it's unpleasant I'm afraid it's a quick route to less and less wearing of the brace. Lack of compliance (ie not wearing it) is the biggest reason why brace treatment fails.

If she can (and you can) - get her to just grit her teeth and get through

I'd really urge her to keep them in, I had them and they were awful, but just a few hours out and they were really tight to get back in. I ended up with head gear at night because I kept whipping them out. Maybe if she's about to go on half term you could tell her that as soon as she breaks from school she must start wearing them all night, that way it doesn't matter so much if she struggles to sleep?

I've been very lax with DS (14) and the twin blocks. To me they're barbaric. He was so unhappy in them and totally silent at school. So he was wearing them at home and on weekends. He now has a compromise appliance which is what they used before twin blocks to wear at school. Slower results but we'll see.

By not wearing them tonight her treatment has been lengthened by one night. By tomorrow night she will be more used to them and more likely to wear them. I think I can live with that.

So she dribbles a bit in her sleep. She will get used to them.

I have to wear a tooth guard every night or I grind my teeth to dust. I hate the feeling when it's new as its so hard but I get through one every 6 weeks so it's a constant irritant.
I would rather not have the sore gums but I accept I need it.

I would make her wear them- dangerous tactic skipping nights as mentioned above.

Going against the grain, I would let her miss tonight, the poor girl has only just got them and worn them all day. Surely she can build up to wearing them all the time.

agree with the comments above - she has to wear them - sorry - they will be unpleasant at first and hurt as well but the sooner she gets used to them the better - encouraging her to take them out all the time will mean she has them longer

I have one with blocks - now with a metal arch, top train tracks and bottoms fitted in 3 weeks - 12 months of blocks was prolonged because she kept 'forgetting' them Hmm

I have another with train tracks top and bottom - I do feel your pain but this is one of those times you have to be a tough parent

I just encouraged DD to keep hers in as long as possible and gave calpol First night she lasted until about 2am, second until 4am, then after that she didn't even need calpol. Grumbles a bit on expansion day and still can't eat in them, but otherwise fine. Give her a chance to get used to them.

The longer she keeps them in, the quicker she gets used to them, saliva production will slow down quicker too. Pointless to keep them out, it's prolonging her agony.

She's had a shit day. Came on her period too, so one break won't kill her. I wore braces for years, so know what she's going through and know how important it is for her to wear them. But it's one night.

My DS had a brace about a month ago..He took it out when in bed..I woke him up put it back in..I can wake him and he won't remember.. Meant he got used to it overnight.. Much less saliva the second day..think he would prefer to dribble in bed than at school.

I think the try again tomorrow bit concerns me... My own ds would give that as an opt out. Depends how motivated she is

what are twin block braces? ive got train tracks top and bottom. had them tightened today. feeling rather sore and sorry for myself!! i think one night wont hurt but make sure you stick to it!!!

I had them OP - she needs to wear them overnight or all the good work done during the day is reversed. I really feel for your dd though, twin blocks are horrible Flowers
