To not tip a hairdresser

Seems salon prices are just going up and up. I tried mobile hairdressers to save money but the hair cuts were awful, layers not maintained and destroyed my fringe. So back to salons but when a cut and blow dry is pushing £40 it just makes me want to stop tipping. I don't mind rounding it up occasionally to the next fiver but AIBU to skip/cut out the tip especially if I'm going every 6-8 weeks.

I never tip my hairdresser. She does a great job, but like you say, it's an expensive service. I never tip in nail or beauty salons either

Yanbu. I will never understand why we are expected to tip some workers and not others. We have a minimum wage in this country so a tip is extra on top of that unlike in other places where the tip makes up a large part of someones pay.

Do you have a local hairdressing college? They normally need to do cuts and colours for their assessments. Much cheaper than a salon. I tend to tip if I am pleased with the cut/colour

I don't really tip anyone. I don't understand the concept of tipping waiting staff an hair dressers. They often do a great job, but how often does anyone tip the nursery nurses who care for our kids day in day out, they would be on min wage too, school crossing lolly people, dental assistants. It's not doable to tip everyone that deserves it.

I don't tip because I find the idea really awkward. I don't pay in cash - surely most people don't? - so I'd have to make sure to carry a £5 note with me and then what?... Pass it to the hairdresser after she's finished?

I also don't tip because I think the hairdresser gets quite a good hourly rate from me! Around £30/hour, which is significantly more than what I earn. The other day I spent £25.50 and was only in the chair for about 20 minutes including having my hair washed!

I do tip my hairdresser but it's taken me ages to find a good one and I'm not a frequent visitor. I usually pay by card and ask them to add the extra on to the transaction.

I don't tip mine and never have. But then I'm paying nearly £100 for a cut (London salon) and I know they are all paid well even the juniors.

I never tip my hairdresser, I pay by card which helps but I just find it embarrassing. We are not Americans, they get paid a decent wage and it seems cringy to give them an extra 3 quid for job well done!

I used to tip hairdressers but don't now as the one I see owns the salon and I pay a higher price to get her services.

If you find a great hairdresser, you could also stop tipping her but buy her a card and possibly vouchers or small gift for Christmas.

I think the reason I tip is more to ensure a decent service next time I go than anything, which is silly! (same reason why I tip hotel cleaners during my stay, but not when I leave).

I tip, but the beauty woman that I use is considered self employed and I'm not sure about the arrangements for the Hairdressers.

I've been using the same salon for over ten years.

A cut and blow is £20-25, my fouls, with cut is only around £40.

I'm in Liverpool, if I was paying London prices, I wouldn't be able to afford a tip, or the amount of 'updo's' I get, which I only pay £20, for.

My main Hairdresser works in Tesco's in the evening/night. The other one still lives with her Parents.

I get a dry cut for £20, no tip.

I give the college kids a tip when I get my colour done though.

Really P's me off paying double what my son pays for a dry cut. I'm thinking of going to the barbers.

Persknally I would sooner pay an amount for the service that ensures all staff are paid a decent wage rather than have their pay supplemented by arbitrary tips. I don't think it is fair that the staff in the most customer-facing roles rake in tips whilst others in the same business do not.

This particularly applies to restaurant and bar work. My niece worked a bar job where she could easily treble her wages if she was serving drinks but saw nothing if she was put on glass collection duty. This hardly seems a fair way to make an income.

Last time i went she put her prices up without warning so bugger getting a tip i was raking in my purse for the odds to pay her i dont see why they need a tip maybe im being tight but £70 for a cut and colour is enough tip imo

I had never considered giving a tip until a few years ago when I went to a new place. She turned a disaster (my hair was literally ruined) into a sassy, sleek do with a fab colour.

When I handed her the tip she shoved it back in my hand and acted quite off. I have no idea why. I thought I might have offended her by offering Blush

I don't tip either. But I give her regular custom and have recommended her to others, so I think she is perfectly happy with the arrangement.

If I felt I needed to tip to ensure that she gave me a decent haircut next time then I wouldn't be letting her near my hair anyway.

I pay £55 for a cut and blow (south east), have never had colour, dread to think how much that'd be.

I don't tip.

I don't think it is fair to say my hairdresser gets £55 for 45 mins work though, needs other staff in the salon (receptionist, hair washer, sweeper and cleaner), the building, equipment and all the other overheads. She will get a fraction of what I pay.

I get mine cut every 8 weeks and it's £38 and I don't tip but at Christmas I put £30 in her Christmas card as she does a great job and has been doing my hair for nearly ten years.

I tip my colourist, my stylist and the girl who washes my hair. I pay around £140 for the service and £15-20 in tips.

I don't tip either. I used to and then stopped because it's already so expensive and WHY do we tip them anyway? It's a bit strange I think.

I would possibly tip a junior, but even then probably not as I don't ever carry cash.

I am usually around £95 for my cut and colour and I go every 7/8 weeks.
