I have just had to do a factory reset on my phone and it now wants a million and one passwords for Apps, emails etc etc. I had to do an "I forgot password" just to get into my Microsoft account but had to have it text me a number so I could reset the password because I couldn't remember the password for my email account And now it wants moooore!

So tempted to rest all passwords to the same flipping thing but then that in itself worries me.

Yep have the same one for all.i have no money to rob...

I user an app on my phone to store passwords (which I regularly back up to the sd card, whole phone gets backed up a few times a year). It's called OI Safe and is free too.

I dont! I just hope my ipad doesnt forget them. The ones i know are a random word with a certain set of numbers after them eg......mumsnet7777. (this is no connection to any password i have)

Someone on here once posted how they did it, and it's so brilliant, it has changed my life when it comes to passwords.

think of a memorable phrase. Let's say, The Meek Shall Inherit The Earth.

Then you use the first letters of each word: tmsite.

Add the first letter of the website you are setting the password for at the beginning, and the last letter at the end, followed by a number- say 1.

So your facebook password is now Ftmsitek1.
Your gmail password is Gtmsitel1

and so on....

Genius.

I have them all in a password protected document (bonkers numerical password) which, given that my computer is heavily locked down by work, should be ok!

I don't. My phone remembers them. If I ever need to log in again I have to reset it.
This is because most sites now insist on a 47 character password containing numbers, capitals, characters.. really fucks me off.

If you do nothing else, do NOT use the same password everywhere. If it gets stolen from one website, it would make it vastly easier for attackers to have a go at all your other accounts.

Password manager is a good solution - or a nice old fashioned piece of paper that you keep safe in your home. The majority of threats you face will be coming over the Internet - it's far less likely that someone will break in to your house. If you store your passwords, you can make them all really long and random - lots of password managers have inbuilt tools to generate good passwords for you.

Enabling two-factor authentication where possible is a good idea too.

The ones I don't use very often and might forget, I do write down, but don't keep them anywhere near the computer and write them in a disguised form.

Say one of my passwords was Lucy67 (it isn't), I might write down "Adrian and Lucy 674123." Anyone who didn't know would assume it was a telephone number.

MY phone did offer like a password sync whatsit (I have a lumia) when I reset it. Is that the kind ofthing you are akll referring to up there^

I have them in a word document that is password protected. But I have recently changed most of them to an 8 figure number that is particularly memorable to me, followed by the first letter of the webpage.

This of course does not work if the app or whatever asks for a mix of caps and lower case and weird symbols.

I get password resets all the jeffing time.

Different complex passwords for every site remembered by Chrome. Where available I use 2-factor authentication.

Its so frustrating. Glad it's not just me!

I do similar to cooee and use a memorable phrase combined with certain letters from the website and I use a mix of lower and upper case and replace letters with numbers but do it I a way I know I will remember so names get capitalised and so on.

Eg Mary had a little lamb his fleece was white as snow. First letter of each word mhallhfwwas.

Mary be little lamb are names so MhaLLhfwwas

Add some numbers. Instead of a it becomes 1 and s becomes a 5

Final password is Mh1LLhfwwa5

Then add the website however you want.

I like themes especially if you have work that forces you to change your password regularly so go through a fave poem line by line or nursery rhymes etc. Plus with stuff like songs or nursery rhymes you can write down a different line of it somewhere as a prompt to yourself!

I change it a bit.
Make different letter capitals etc...

For phone mine is easy.
It's one touch but 5 letters!!

I have a standard phrase 'foxholes2020' for example, and I add the first letter of the website name, as a capital letter to the end of it. It works pretty well. I also do similar for the increasing number of pun codes I am asked for. I have a set 4 number one and then add the number that corresponds to the first letter of the website address, so if my code is 1111, Amazon would be 11111, eBay 11115 for example

Lastpass. I have 459 accounts, so remembering this is hardly practical.

The key points are (a) different passwords for every account, because even if you keep your copies safe, you can't rely on the people at the other end (b) two factor wherever and whenever possible (including for Lastpass itself) (c) a strong master password and (d) did I mention two factor?

Oh, it's worth turning two factor on.

I back the whole mess up by extracting a CSV file with all my accounts in it, and saving it on a secure memory stick (one with a hardware PIN-pad).

But if you live in the Apple world almost entirely, as I do these days, the Apple password vault stuff is pretty sound, too. I think I'd try that before Lastpass, were I not already a Lastpass customer.

Two factor. Remember: Gmail, Twitter, FB, Dropbox all support it.

When I had one or two accounts, it was no problem, but nowadays every website requires a certain number of characters, an uppercase letter, a number, the plot of an episode from FRIENDS and the blood of your sworn enemies.
