Shop assistant in Next, male, early 30s

Him: ooh when are you due?
Me: 6 June
Him: ha! You will probably go over (??)
Me: no it's a c section so I won't
Him: (sad face) oh why c section?
Me: Hmm
Him: it's a boy isn't it?
Me: no third girl
Him: OH NO!!!!!!

I agree people can say stupid things to pregnant women, but they are only taking an interest. They don't mean any upset.

I'm pregnant and I love the small talk, was the same when pregnant with ds last year as well.

Yanbu if you don't like small talk opt out

How do you opt out though. Tell people to shut their beaks, when. They ask about your pregnancy, abd show enthusiasm. You just can't be rude to these people.

You can politely tell people that they've asked a very personal question that you're not happy discussing (the "why the c section?" definitely comes into this category).

I also glared at someone looking at dc3 who was pretending to wake up my sleeping baby. I had no sleep myself at this point ! Seriously though you don't have to entertain the public, that's not your job

My mum is the worst for this. She learned her lesson recently though.

Randomer: My baby is 3.
Mum: Oh. It must just be that top. It's lovely where did you get it?

It would probably be better if nobody ever spoke to anybody again just in case some sort of annoyance/offence is caused.

Erm pardon my rudeness but pregnant women are not "that interesting" to the point where they're entertaining. Hmm.
Can we twist it the other way, then. Is it fair to say that. It's not the publics job to offer pregnant women a seat or treat them with kid gloves

That's in no way comparable. There are allocated seats on public transport for anyone less able to stand. It isn't in exchange for the ability to grill pregnant women on their birth choices or state of their uterus.

Nice is 'when are you due', 'is it a boy or girl' 'is it your first'? Etc

But asking about my reasons for c section and saying 'oh no' about the sex is not

I know it is annoying sometimes, but you didn't need to tell him you were having a c section. You could have said 'mmm' or maybe'. And I'm sure he was just (ineptly) trying to be friendly

Next person who asks why you need a c-section, give them the goriest details of previous birth you can think of. Along with detailed descriptions of your c-scar and mutilated/ still perfect fanjo.

I didn't mean that having a c section is anything to be ashamed of (I've had one myself), but that if you don't want to prolong the conversation you can be vague rather than giving more information

I dislike personal questions asked by strangers, even more so when I am a scant few weeks away from giving birth. End of tether and all that.

My neighbour said, "what a shame" to my ds when we told her he had (another) sister. Still annoyed by that 2.5 years later.
