AIBU in the 1970s

I grew up in the 1970s, the age of relaxed and free range parenting. If mumsnet had existed then, what do you think mums would have asked in AIBU?

Angel Delight was the "posh" brand name. Instant whip was cheaper.

I've just had a new baby is it ok for my 3.5y old twins to hold the new baby all the way back home. They are in the back seat of the car what can happen.
(1979!)

AIBU to add orange squash to the bottle of Mackie that I drink every day to make my milk richer while I'm feeding DC? I don't like the taste of stout, but the doctor says that I must have it to help to nourish the baby and DM suggested adding orange squash as that's what she did when she was feeding me.
Also, AIBU to order Davenports to start delivering 7 bottles of stout a week - it's heavy carrying the bottles with all the rest of my shopping... . Smile

Instant whip with tinned peaches was seen as a great summer tea pudding in our house!

RuthyToothy · 13/05/2016 15:57

AIBU to take baby to a party in the carrycot, stash it safely in the under-stairs cupboard away from all the cigarette smoke and casual misogyny, then get so hammered that I forget it's there and go home without said baby?

wol1968 · 13/05/2016 16:13

AIBU to let our 3 kids and the 2 kids of our friends all squeeze together in the boot of our Ford Cortina estate? They all love it!

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 13/05/2016 16:37

AWBU to insist that our teenage son has to have really short hair, even though his ears stick out?

Readers...I was that son!

Permanentlyexhausted · 13/05/2016 16:44

AIBU to ignore my children's squeals of pain when I make them sit on the nasty plastic faux-leather seats in the back of our estate car in their little teeny shorts. They should be making the most of this delightful summer of '76.

notoTTIP · 13/05/2016 16:46

AIBU to organise a coach trip to the sea side and let the coach stop for loo breaks in country lanes, women in the right field men to the left

blitheringbuzzards1234 · 13/05/2016 16:46

We loved that really sweet drink powder which came in a tin and had to be mixed in water called Creamola Foam, came in different flavours. We drank tap water, if you'd have told us that in the future we would be buying water in bottles we'd have thought it hilarious.

Permanentlyexhausted · 13/05/2016 16:46

AIBU to expect my children to listen to the same two tape cassettes on every car journey we make for the next 8 years? One of them is a collection of music from the Band of the Coldstream Guards. What could possibly be objectionable about that?

wol1968 · 13/05/2016 16:56

AIBU to drive all the way up to Scotland in one day? We'll start at 4am with a break for a picnic at Scotch Corner at lunchtime, and DD can sit in the middle of the back seat like she always does. She complains that there's a metal bar under the seat padding that makes her bottom feel numb and sore, and she gets very bored because she can't read as she gets carsick. AIBU to think she's being a bit spoiled complaining about this?

Janecc · 13/05/2016 16:57

AIBU to think that members of the Paedophile Information Exchange, who have admitted to sex with a child or having indecent photos of a child should be put in prison instead of being allowed to campaign for lowering the age of consent on the telly? Should we really be allowing these people freedom of speech?

Janey50 · 13/05/2016 16:57

Rubenesque - I went to the doctor's today to get a coil fitted and he gave me a form for my husband to sign his consent before the Dr. would do it. Shock Did that really happen?!

Janecc · 13/05/2016 17:07

AIBU to purée my 9 year old sons Sunday roast dinner so that his father can hold him down and force feed him with the wooden spoon? I'm so worried he isn't going to grow up normal because he wants to be a vegetarian. At least this way he's getting meat once a week.

metimeisforwimps · 13/05/2016 17:10

Wibu to make dd's summer dresses out of last year's roller blinds? The starch will probably come out after 50 or so washes.

Janecc · 13/05/2016 17:11

AIBU for letting my husband flog our new puppy with a long whip and insisting my 3 and 5 yr old watch because he we'ed on the floor?

BeautifulMaudOHara · 13/05/2016 17:18

Has anyone tried that new soda stream? I want one but Dh says we should keep just keep buying fizzy pop, AIBU?

blitheringbuzzards1234 · 13/05/2016 17:18

Janecc you're breaking my heart. Motherhood seemed so much more carefree in those days. How, why, when did we get so stressed about it?

MerryMarigold · 13/05/2016 17:26

AIBU to give my 6yo dd a copy of The Body Book? Dh says it's too young and he is not ready for questions, but I think she is very ready to see a cross section of a penis inside a vagina.

Janecc · 13/05/2016 17:28

blithering plenty more where that came from.... Brought up by very tall children.

silverpenny · 13/05/2016 17:29

I remember the body book, I remember being very sad at the death part. Also the description of sex as a "loving cuddle"

DawgDawg · 13/05/2016 17:31

AIBU to light my fag of the gas ring whilst trying not to set my hair alight as its covered in Bristow hairspray?

GarlicShake · 13/05/2016 17:32

AIBU to think my boss is overpaid? He earns 20% more than me.

Fantastic, Toad! Worrying to think there's now a generation-and-a-half who see present levels of wealth gap as 'natural'.
