Where you share a taxi how to you split it?

Recently got a cab home with friends.

Quite a few times, once with a friend who lives double the distance from where we travelled from and once with a friend from round the corner I have paid the full amount to my house and they have continued home.

AIBU to think this isn't benefitting me at all and is a bit unfair?

I'd usually do a split equally between the number of people in the cab, regardless of the individual distance. Easiest if the last person pays & the others reimburse, unless the fare is fixed beforehand.

Ask the driver and pay half.

BIL used to dodge paying as we had to pay all the way anyway... I do have reason to despise him

Oh this will bring out all those who think a married couple are one entity.

OP, when you get out of the cab, pay one third of the charge to that point. Give the driver a tip, then leave them to it.

Sorry, I was thinking there were three in the cab. Split the bill equally when you get to your house.

If they give a fixed fare amount in advance, and the extra distance not much further I would just pay half, or my pro rata share of the whole.

If it was a lot further I would leave my share of the 'fare so far' with the remaining passengers, with an added extra amount on top because there is usually a 'call out' fee - a black cab, for example, has an amount on the meter before you move a metre.

Couples definitely count as two individuals as regards splitting the fare.

Is your house exactly on the same route as going to their house direct?

It's so difficult to split taxis fairly!

I would normally pay in full to my house, if I was the shorter distance. Sure, it's not saving me any money, but its not costing me anything either is it? The person going the further distance may save money, but equally they may not as its unlikely that the first stop is directly en-route to the second stop, so there may not be a big saving for anyone. I've always thought cab sharing was more about safety (i.e. not leaving one person alone on the street waiting for a cab) rather than money saving. I'd have to pay the cab to my house anyway, so would have budgeted for the full cost of that journey.

I would pay half as I got out, as that's the "shared" part (and the amount actually on the meter at my journey's end, so to speak). The balance is down to the one actually travelling further.

Oh yes - the "married couples" thing... me and two couples shared a taxi to a venue, (I do have a DH but he isn't very sociable) and it was £15, the couples each got a fiver out and looked at me... and I put my £3 in!
Then there's the friend who lives up the lane from me who always insists that we go PAST my house to take her home first as she "doesn't want to go up the lane alone in a taxi".... But it's OK for me to be alone coming back DOWN the lane in the taxi!!!

And I didn't answer the question!!! If it's all village friends we split equally.
When it's various locations, I live furthest away so expect to pay a bit more than them but less than if I was travelling on my own...

I would split the whole fair equally unless one person lives a much further distance and the taxi isn't detouring at all from the route to their house to drop you off.. Otherwise it just gets complicated.

We always split equally. After a great night out I couldn't care less about divvying up a taxi bill based on mileage. I just want to get him and make sure my friends get home safely, whether they're in the next road or 10 miles away.

Would usually pay half what it would have cost me to get a taxi straight home on my own. That's normally around £25-30, so I'd hand over £15, or £20 if I didn't have change. However if there's more than two of us sharing, it gets too complicated to work out accurately especially after a few drinks so I'd give at least £10 to whomever was being dropped off last regardless of how many in the taxi. It's always worked out so far, and any extra starts the kitty for the next night out!

I once got screwed over by a taxi driver who basically double-charged us - we dropped my first friend home, she insisted on paying her own fare and gave it to the taxi driver. The two of us remaining were then dropped home (flatmates) and we split the fare, and didn't realise til we had got out that the driver couldn't have zeroed the meter... so the deceitful bugger had engineered himself a rather large tip

I often share a taxi with a friend and her house is the furthest away. We always just halve the bill and I've never considered splitting hairs / pounds / miles, we both save a bit by sharing and it's easier too.

I've also done girls nights out where 4 of us get picked up or dropped off and we all split the bill by 4, again not considering who lives where. It just wouldn't occur to me! We all usually chuck a bit in for the driver too.

I'm not in a wealthy demographic either before anyone assumes I'm in a position where I'm rolling in it.

I suppose it would only cause resentment if one person consistently wasn't chipping fairly, but then in general I wouldn't be sharing a taxi with someone like that anyway as we wouldn't be friends.

If a taxi is going from A to B to C and of the 3 people who get in, 2 are a couple, then I can't see why it is wrong for the couple to be treated as a unit. The taxi is going to 2 locations so you split the cost according to number of stops. Of course that doesn't work if the single person is going massively out of their way for the benefit of the couple, but generally people only share taxis when they live in the same direction.

Couples should be individually charged if they are all going from A to B.
