To accept a promotion when a tiny bit pregnant?

That's it really. Very slightly pregnant. Had a MMC in the summer hols last year, headteacher doesn't know. Been verbally offered a more senior role from sept. Just blustered through the conversation today but I feel bad. I'll know in June if all looks ok so I guess I'll tell him then. Can he rescind the offer? Should I tell him now & then he can plan for me not being there? It's just so early :( I think he'll be really cross that I've agreed to the job whilst knowingly pregnant. Any thoughts?

Take the job. You can't be discriminated against because of pregnancy and your boss obviously thinks you can do the job

And as you say, you are only a tiny bit pregnant. Some people may not know by now, and sadly, some pregnancies do not stick.

Why wouldn't you accept it? They'll need maternity cover but that's just the way it is. Congratulations.

I think the iffy thing is that my contract won't change until Sept so I'll be (hopefully) really quite pregnant by then. If I could sign it tomorrow, I would. I'm very pragmatic about it being so early. I want to forget about it for a couple of months really!!

Good Lord, don't discriminate against yourself for being pregnant! There are enough people in the world to do that for you!

Do it. I've come to the conclusion in life, you have to at times put yourself first.

I was offered a promotion in early pregnancy days and I ummed and aaahed about it for a week before I decided I had to out myself first- more money whilst on maternity-yes please!
I then told my work at 12 weeks and everyone was fine about it. I'd made a big deal about it in my head.
In the end it took so long for them to sort out my promotion, my official start date was two days before I went on maternity!

A) You've every right to take it. Legally, morally.
B) If I were an employer with a female member of staff of childbearing age, especially in a profession like teaching where you figure most people probably quite like children, I'd factor in that they might well be going on maternity leave at some point.

Accept it and clarify exactly what b the terms are. Sign something if at all possible and make sure everybody knows about it so they can't go back on it once you tell them your pregnant. Do not feel guilty - you will be missing a few months to a year, tops, in exchange for years of a good worker! It could cost them a good percentage of your mat. Pay for the recruitment process if they had to go external instead! Seriously, you deserve it!

Also you never have to tell anyone you knew you were pregnant at this stage if you don't want to. Tell them as late as you can (legally and physically) get away with it! If you tell them you didn't realise until 3/4 months they can hardly interrogate you! Congratulations!

I did. I took an slt post on the same day I got a positive pg test. I was pragmatic about it (although felt guilty later).

I know I'd tell anyone else to take it but I feel deceitful talking about & planning for a job when I know that I'm pregnant & won't be doing it for long. I'm lying to them basically! I know you're all right though. I think I'll avoid the subject now for as long as possible & claim not to have known during today's conversation!

You're not lying to anyone. If you'd advise a friend to take the job why are you discriminating against yourself?

This is mad. OP you must accept the promotion. If it makes you feel better I know of many women who have taken new roles/been promoted in City senior positions (paying 200-600k) knowing they were pregnant. Congratulations on both fronts!

I started a new job when I was 16 weeks pregnant and I felt the same way as you in that I was hesitant. But you have to put yourself/ your life/ your family first, and if a promotion means a better life then grasp that opportunity if it's what you want to do. Don't discriminate against yourself just because your pregnant- your employer sure as hell can't do that!

Are you going to return after maternity leave? For me that's the clincher morally.

(I started a brand new job 18 weeks pregnant having conceived just after the interview. I took 6 months maternity leave and expect to do this for 30+ years. In the scheme of things it's not a big deal).

Definitely take it! I applied for promotions when pregnant (sadly didn't get them but a girl can dream...and childcare costs are scaring me!)
