To use Marmite instead of Tabasco?

I really want to try a recipe but it has Tabasco in it. I don't have any and have never tried it and don't like very hot spicy food so I'm not buying it, I do have some dried chilli flakes so I could pop a tiny amount of those in? Or Marmite?
I have some balsamic as well, I believe Tabasco is venigary so could put some of that in too.

NO

MajesticSeaFlapFlap · 17/04/2016 11:42

Noooo

WorraLiberty · 17/04/2016 11:42

The chilli flakes would be a fairly good substitute.

I don't get why you're considering Marmite though? There's no similarity there at all.

MargotLovedTom · 17/04/2016 11:43

Marmite is nothing like Tabasco! Just go with the chilli flakes.

Ifailed · 17/04/2016 11:44

marmite ≠ tabasco.

gobbynorthernbird · 17/04/2016 11:44

Tabasco isn't that hot, so if you can tolerate chilli flakes you'd be fine. Marmite and balsamic are so far removed from the flavour you'd be better off leaving it out completely. What's the recipe for?

ShatnersBassoon · 17/04/2016 11:44

No! I love Marmite and Tabasco, but would never use one in place of the other.

NicknameUsed · 17/04/2016 11:48

Tabasco is hot. Just go easy with it.
Marmite is nothing like Tabasco.
What is the recipe?

IcaMorgan · 17/04/2016 11:52

My fiancé who is a chef says just the chilli flakes

Flossyfloof · 17/04/2016 11:53

It's Potato, Leek and Feta patties.
I am not going to buy any Tabasco, I don't think I'll like it and I'll never use it again.
I haven't got any Feta either.I'm going to use onion instead of leeks
I originally misremembered the recipe and bought butternut squash instead of sweet potato.
In fact the resulting concoction won't be anything like the original recipe so I don't know why I am worried about 1-2 tsp Tabasco,

No! Plus you only use a few drops of Tabasco - you make the dish how you like it.

Chilli flakes would be OK but prob hotter than the Tabasco.

Flossyfloof · 17/04/2016 11:54

I suggested Marmite as an alternative as I assumed that Tabasco would be a fairly strong flavour.
Thanks all, Marmite it isn't!

More importantly, what are you using instead of feta?

Flossyfloof · 17/04/2016 11:56

Whereabouts are you, Morgan? Is he free to pop over to help out at all? Change of kitchen as good as a rest and all that?
Thanks

Tbh I might go t and buy the Feta. I have some fat reduced cheddar, some Stilton, plenty of Dairylea (Slimming World) and some Phillu light too.
I actually think I might as well go shopping tomorrow and make something completely different today!

He's I'll at the moment flossy, been off sick since Thursday so don't think you want him cooking at the moment

Flossyfloof · 17/04/2016 12:02

Oh never mind, then, just a thought! Thanks again,

Make something else that you do have the ingredients for?!

TheSpottedZebra · 17/04/2016 12:28

Just do a potato, cheese and onion pie. It'll be nice. Make them patty shaped if it pleases you!

TheSpottedZebra · 17/04/2016 12:30

A bit of mustard would be good in it?

Wolpertinger · 17/04/2016 12:31

I think you'd better wait until you have the right ingredients. Butternut squash will prob not hold together as well as sweet potato - turns to more of a puree. The onion will also make them more likely to fall apart as the leek gets v soft and easy to combine which the onion won't. And the feta is there partly for flavour and partly because it doesn't melt - all your alternatively will melt out of the pattie and they will disintegrate.

Save the marmite for a bloody Mary.
