I don't know why I'm finding this so difficult but my mother will shortly be moving to the UK from overseas. She is only bringing a suitcase with her which will have her clothes in and that's pretty much it. Ultimately she'll be renting her own property but, in the interim, she'll be staying with us.

I would like to make her a package/basket of things that she may need initially during the first couple of days when she might not feel like getting out what with jet lag etc. I'm looking for some advice on what she will need.

I'm thinking things like a toothbrush, a sponge, deodorant etc. Also larger items that she won't be able to bring like a dressing gown/Pajamas etc. If you were starting again with only a suitcase of clothes, what would you appreciate in your first few days?

I'd appreciate the usual toiletries, as you've said; flannel, sponge, towel, shampoo, toothbrush and paste, deodorant etc.
Maybe some personal items like a dressing gown, slippers, pyjamas. Some books perhaps? Is she ok for underwear and bedding? Favourite drinks/snacks?
However, I would say that it's a little bizarre that you're having to worry about this stuff.

I don't doubt it, and didn't mean it to come across as a dig. More that it's a lot to worry about, since everyone has their own preferences and little ways.
I'd go with toiletries, her own set of bedding and home comforts, you can't go far wrong.

How long have you agreed that she can stay with you?

Aww I think that is a lovely idea, very thoughtful I'm sure your mother will appreciate it :)
If she's into reading a nice book, or a list of all local shops/library/station etc on a lovely card the gesture would go a long way, candles, photo frames?
I'm sure she would be very touched with whatever you do x

I think it's a very kind thought. I'm quite used to moving around with only very limited amounts of luggage. The basket is a lovely, welcoming idea. I'd keep to the standard things you might expect to find in a hotel: cotton wool, cotton tips, tissues, shampoo, shower gel, body creme, toothbrush, toothpaste. A few biscuits and lots of water.

If you are family, would you be happy to share fresh clothes if she needs them? I'd stand by to see what else might be helpful. You could easily spend a lot on things she already happens to have and then resent a bit, having to spend more, offering to buy whatever she really might need.

I think if I was in a similar position, I'd love a couple of good books, and maybe a bar of chocolate.

A mirror, Vase of flowers/ pot plant in room, a throw for the bed/cushions, some reading material, ....anything to make her room welcoming and a place she can retreat to , to call her own

Box of tissues.

Own keys for the house.

Mobile phone with a PAYG sim with a decent amount of credit on it.

Map of the town, if she is not familiar with using online maps.
