To be very excited about my new CD player?

My old CD/radio gave up the ghost a couple of months ago and i have missed listening to all my CDs so much. and have even been buying new ones in the interim Everyone has been on at me to just buy my music on itunes. But no, i've just bought myself a new CD/radio and i am very excited to get it home.

Am i really OLD? Grin i just cant embrace the itunes. I used to think my parents were so embarrassing for still listening to their LPs when i had my CDs as a teen. Now i am them. Grin

I still buy CDs and lots of them. I can't get my head around paying for music that doesn't physically exist and you don't actually own.

I want a new cd player. havent got one yet. I dont own anything apple so couldn't use itunes even if I understood it.

What have you got? I bought my kitchen digital radio not thinking to check the CD player. It is rubbish and I miss having a decent one so much I am shopping.

Do have to tell you all my teenage DDs' friends now have turntables and LPs Grin

It's a bit mad that you think the only option to CD's is itunes. As if there weren't any number of different ways to get music!
If you like CD's, have a CD player. I couldn't be arsed; they are expensive, take up room, faffy, scratch easily, and almost no-one has a CD player anymore anyway.

It's apparently not even about iTunes these days - it's all Spotify and the like. The young 'uns don't see the point in paying to buy and own music where you then store it on a physical device when instead you can just pay £10 a month or whatever and have streaming access to as much music as you like whenever and wherever you like. I can't quite wrap my head around that.

I've only just sold my old car which had nowt but an analogue radio and a cassette player in it. I'm only in my early 30s but apparently I'm old too!

I've recently discover Deezer and now stream all my music via my phone or tablet. I bought a bluetooth speaker and I love it, I can listen to music wherever I like and it's free!! I can also stream it via bluetooth to my car radio as well. You get the odd advert (unless you subscribe) but it's great! I still can't bring myself to get rid of my old CD's though, even though my CD player hasn't been used for about 5 years.

I'm not particularly young either, late 40's.

Yanbu. We still cds in this house. Just bought a cd player for the car. I prefer having something physical that someone maybe out there.

Just a £20 alba from argos. Sound is good enough for me listening in the kitchen. Havent tested it with volume up to hear from other rooms.

Its ignorance really tbh. I dont understand the whole "virtual music" and what is compatible with what so ive stuck to what i know which is CDs.

What are the alternatives?

So with deezer or spotify can you get old stuff like johnny cash or hanson? Blush

Btw my CDs arent expensive. I buy them on amazon. Some are a penny, plus £1.26 postage. Mostly from zoverstocks.

If you want to play Spotify through your phone you'll need an iPhone dock or input so you can run a lead from your headphone socket. Or you could use a Bluetooth speaker.

You don't need any Apple devices to use iTunes Confused. Unfortunately iTunes editions tend to be the ones with extra songs, so I do often buy those... But I also tend to buy the cd anyway Blush. I prefer lossless codecs.

Spotify don't have the rarer things. I also don't want to have to pay for the rest of my life to hear stuff that I love, plus I'd rather give the artist more money. I tend to buy CDs direct from the artist if I can.

I still place a really high value on music though, a lot of people don't.

I have literally no idea what this means? I am guessing juno and bandcamp are like spotify? Ni idea what flac is.

The way the files are encoded. MP3 and m4a files use a form of compression that loses detail. Flac doesn't lose anything, so it is the same quality as the CD.

Juno and bandcamp are just places you can buy music in lossless formats. Most places you're stuck with mp3s.

Spotify doesn't have everything. I have searched for stuff and it's not there or I can only find shitty covers. Plus I don't like how aggressive it is at taking over pc's and despite being closed down, its still running..

in addition to iTunes, you have spotify, deezer, youtube, amazon music, shazam, musictrax, tunin radio, vevo, plus others..

To use your phone, you either need a bluetooth speaker (cheaper on amazon than argos), one that you can dock, you can get a 30 pin one and buy an adapter for the lightening (this will also charge your phone when docked). Or one that uses audio output cable (the headphone socket, This won't charge unless plugged into your charger)

Anyone going to gigs will tell you there are always CDs and vinyl at the merch stands so yes there are enough of us still buying cds. We also have two independent record shops managing to hang on where I live, and I love going in there for a browse. I like 'real' music, but also use Spotify and itunes, depends what I'm after. Everyone I know has a cd player and many have a record player too, and that's with a broad age mix. I find I listen to my old CDs more than my 'old' downloads though - I see them as I look through, the lists on itunes get skipped through too quickly. It's like books and ebooks - no need to choose a side.

Absolutely no need to choose sides.
I stream. But I also listen to CD's and Vinyls.
Also have VHS as well as newer modes. And books as well as e-books.
Everything has it's place if you are willing to embrace

Check your new CD player for a line in OP, you might be able to just plug your phone into it via the headphone jack. I bought something similar for my mum and it had one.

Gosh, it's a whole other world on here!
I like CDs. But even the sound quality on those isn't really good enough. Give me a scratchy old long play record...

Thanks all. Ive just checked and it has a line in. So how do i connect the phone to it? The line in is a round hole, what connects it to my phone?
