Imagine this, if you will: Two adults, seven excited children and two dogs in two cars driving 15 miles to an exciting venue the children have either never been to before or were too young to remember. Imagine then arriving at said venue to find out it is closed and doesn't open until March 25th!!

This was as much my treat as the childrens. My husband had told me about it but said he'd plan the day, he'd pay for everything etc. What he didn't do was check the bloody place was actually going to be open!!

So. AIBU that he should have checked??

Depends on why it was shut, I guess. If it was seasonal opening times, or regular Sunday closing, he should have checked.

But if it's closed as a one-off it's a bit different,

I did this once at a local farm type place. I didn't stop to think that they might not have lambing and farm trails in February. Luckily it was only 10 mins away and we could deflect the tantrum by going to soft play.

Didn't he try to book tickets online first? It's usually much cheaper than buying on the day. Plus he would have realised the place was closed when he couldn't select a date!

No not Legoland. It's a heavy horse/farm place so not a major attraction but we were all looking forward to going. Not angry with him at all, just had some disappointed children on our hands. We've had a tough few months and wanted to have a family fun day. Silly husband :) We went to a country park nearby instead.

If it's a theme park or similar, I don't think it would occur to my DH that it shuts for the winter. We've had that conversation before.

But checking the website for prices, times etc does seem pretty basic ......

Oh, how disappointing OP! Your DH must be kicking himself that he didn't check. I hope you can rearrange the trip for a few weeks' time.

I won't lie I would have been annoyed if it was my dh, but only briefly. It's happened to us all.

It is crap for children, we try hard not to make promises we know we can't keep, they need to know plans can change and build resilience. I'm sure they had a great day anyway. They are more affected by how their parents handle these things I think, so I try not to let disappointments have too much impact on mood etc as that's worse.

Ideally yes, he should have checked, but I think we have all made mistakes in the past.

We did once, several years back now. Me, DH and PILs all drove from Sheffield to Birmingham to visit Cadburys World, to discover it was closed on that day of the week! Never even thought to check. Oops.

The day may or may not have brought special memories had it gone as planned.

This way, you and the children will be laughing about it 20 years from now. That's how family legends really are made. Well, this and the time little Jimmy fell into the carp pond or granny dropped the turkey.

Many years ago when my DDad was alive we realised that, despite us both working weird shifts, we both had a day off together in a few months time. We decided to go and see an attraction that interested us both on that day and talked about our day out for months in advance. The day came and we set off dead early on the 120 mile journey with a picnic packed. We got there and there had been a burst pipe and it was closed. We looked at each other and burst out laughing! It has gone down as a legend in our family

We never did go back. Over the years the name of the place was replaced in our vocabulary to mean shut. I know it's Mothers Day but I miss my DDad.

poor Dh, bet he feels utterly rubbish. I did the same half term. Certain attraction doesn't open Monday's and kids were so excited so we headed to the park instead.
