Going on holiday in Egypt

First time poster so please bear with me.
DH is due to start a new job next week and finished the previous one last Friday, so he’s got a week between jobs. A couple of weeks ago he asked me if I am ok with him to go somewhere warm for a week. DC are at school, so it would be just him going away. I said I didn’t mind, he’s done that before and all was fine. I totally understand where was coming from, we both work FT and a relaxing childfree week would be a good way to spend time between jobs. So far so good.
However, when last Friday he announced that he was going to Egypt, I said I wouldn’t be happy with his choice of destination. I said I am not comfortable with the safety situation there and bearing in mind we have two small kids, it should be a joint decision. I am still fine for him to go elsewhere (i.e. Spain etc) Money were not an issue in this case but it also very suspicious when someone is offering you a very good deal at a very cheap price.
Now he decided not to go anywhere and now sitting at home and sulking.
So, IABU to tell him to grow up? Apparently, I ruined his holiday and very controlling.

Yes, there is a good reason why Egypt would be a cheap destination at the moment. I certainly wouldn't go there right now, the situation is too uncertain. The threat of terrorism is high in many places but I am sure he could find somewhere warm that was a bit safer.

Eygypt isn't a great choice at the moment no, that said without DC I'd probably go. Tbf everywhere is a risk isn't it but Eygypt & Turkey probably more so.

I wouldn't go to egypt alone leaving a spouse and young children behind, so for me, he shouldn't have booked it - why should he see the pyramids and not you?

I don't know that I'd be hugely worried about the security situation, only about him getting a stomach upset, as they're really common on holiday in Sharm and similar resorts, and him buggering up his new job by being ill straight away in his probation period.

If he's happy to sulk I'd be happy to let him.

I think you are being a bit unreasonable. Egypt isn't particularly unsafe depending on which region he wanted to go to; the red sea/sharm el sheikh is probably fine.

He's going on his own presumably he is aware of current risks?

Given that government link says UK airlines still don't fly to Sharm I wouldn't go, even on an indirect flight.

How was he planning to get there anyway? Flying / going to a different part?

He was going to go to Hurgada, I think.

Sharm is theoretically safe but you can't fly in there because of the bombing of the Russian plane.

I work in aviation we are still not flying to SSH and no current plans to resume. The security at SSH is substandard.

I didn't think anyone was flying to the Egyptian resorts at the moment?

Quite apart from that, I'm not sure how happy I'd be about my H holidaying totally alone. Do YOU get a week in the sun all alone too?

It's not somewhere I would want to go and I'd be less than thrilled at DH taking a holiday without me hypocritical as I have taken the DC away while he was working in India but if I didn't mind, I wouldn't be fussed about the choice.

Yanbu, is he living under a rock? Yes he's entitled to a holiday but selfish of him to go somewhere he knows isn't safe.

Santa, I do get to travel for work maybe twice a year for about a week. Its not holiday but it leaves DH in full charge of kids.

Hurghada is absolutely fine. I have friends that live there and have had holidays there a number of times - we are going again in July. There are no restrictions to flights from UK to Hurghada. Tour operators are still going and still taking bookings.

The 3 people injured in the attack in January happened during a robbery, not as part of an ISIS terrorist attack as was first reported - on the same day 4 under 18's were stabbed to death in seperate attacks in London.

I would be more worried about who his holiday companion was.

I realise that you are referring to a different area of Egypt so maybe my post is irrelevant but I have just returned home from a week in Cairo, and I have to say that my experience was all positive.

I was there with an all female group and we stayed in a hotel only 10 minutes walk away from Tarhir Square, so we were very central and surrounded by people and traffic all the time.
We did the pyramids, walked around the local area (sometimes alone, at night),went to local restaurants and cafes, used the metro system and lots more.

We felt safe the whole time we were there, we were constantly greeted with "welcome to Egypt", the locals were very warm and pleased to see us, and were only too happy to humour our attempts at speaking Arabic :-)

Before I went lots of friends and family expressed concern for my safety but I pointed out to them that bad things can happen anywhere (would they have been as concerned if I were travelling to Paris in light of recent events? Probably not!) I feel that Egypt it is not unsafe as the media would have us believe and I would go back tomorrow if I could!

Didn't realise you still can't fly into Sharm Chaz

I tend to agree with Comb; bad things happen everywhere and you shouldn't let a vague fear of terrorism dictate your life.

I live in Cairo (with my 3dc). Just come back from a fabulous weekend in Luxor - we travelled by sleeper train one way.

Honestly, I feel safer in Egypt in many ways than I did in the UK.

Statistically the biggest risk to a tourist is the taxi ride from airport to hotel; the traffic is nuts!

So yes, I do think YAB a bit U. But so is he if you are that anti - I think if he's just after a sunny break (as opposed to Egypt has been top of his bucket list for 30 years, say) - he could choose another destination to save you worrying.

There are threats of terrorism everywhere even more so in the west but i bet that doesnt stop anyone leaving their house.
