To ask landlord for a new carpet?

Moved in 2 weeks ago and had all the carpets professionally cleaned due to the strong smell of dog, the living room in particular. The living room still absolutely stinks especially when the sun shines on it. Would I be unreasonable to ask for the carpet to be replaced?

You can always ask, why wouldn't you Don't ask, don't get.

Let them know that you have done what you can already by having the carpet professionally cleaned and see what they say.

Although no guarantee Landlord will say yes though if you accepted the rental agreement with the existing furnishings.

As above. Try burning a candle, worked wonders for me when the cat went no.2 on the carpet and stank the room out.

You can ask, they might refuse or they might comply.

Whatever you do, don't offer to re-carpet yourself.

A landlord can have you out within 2 months.

At the end of the day, the ball is in the landlord's court. A decent one, interested in long term tennans might buy a new carpet, a less concerned one might terminate your tenancy.

Why would he terminate the contract just because I asked?

Landlord would have to be pretty unreasonable to terminate a tenancy just because you asked about replacing carpet ruined by the previous tenant! So long as you don't insist or aren't rude that would be a pretty extreme reaction.

Ask. At least there'll be a record of the fact it was like that when you moved in.

Also, try and locate the previous tenant. Find out whether the LL deducted from the deposit for carpet cleaning or the state of the carpets.

Did you have a schedule on moving in listing the state of the property?

Was there a check-in inventory? What did it say about the carpets? Why are you paying for carpet cleaning? I have been both a landlord and a tenant over the years and it the responsibility of the landlord to arrange cleaning before a new tenancy starts. If you did not have a check in jnventory you probably have a dodgy landlord.

The landlord can't have you out within two months if you've only been in 2 weeks.

The op moved in two weeks ago. If she has an assured tenancy then she can't be kicked out with two months notice just for asking for new carpet. She cannot decide to leave because the carpet smells of dog nor can she force the landlord to replace the carpet. She accepted the property and both her and the landlord are bound by contract.

She can ask the landlord to replace the carpet. If he refuses then she can offer to pay for the new carpet. Depending on the size of the room you can get carpet off cuts at a good price. I realise this is not great.
