To get the rage when people repeat half a sentence?

You know when somebody says something to you, you don't hear them so they repeat a selection of words from the sentence that make no sense alone?

Example -
DP - have gone to Harry Potter world this weekend?
Me - sorry what?
DP - Harry Potter World?
Me -

Why would saying Harry Potter World at me make sense in any possible way?
If I didn't hear you I didn't hear the whole thing, therefore you have to repeat the whole thing!

He does this a lot, so does my stepfather, it is really really annoying

Oh i feel your pain. Worse is when they repeat the bit I've heard, but not what I didn't! Aarrrrggghh!

I actually thought you meant when people repeat what you said, kind of saying the end of each sentence with a tiny delay.
That is called echolalia. My aunt does it. Drives me up the wall.

Yes! My DP does this all the time.

Him: "Can you mumble mumble mumble please?"
Me: "Pardon?"
Him: "The car"
Me: "What about the car?"
Him: "On Tuesday"
Me: "I didn't hear the [motherfucking] question so I don't know what you're talking about..."

For me it's the opposite, when I hear the first bit and miss the past couple of words, say pardon, and have to listen to the whole lot again just to get to the last two words and their voice trails off again and I miss it again!

I have the opposite issue. I ask DH an either or question and he says "yes". Or I'll ask him something - like did he read something in the paper about X and he'll respond with "I think we have enough milk, so don't worry" or similar. If he doesn't hear me properly I wish he'd just ask me to repeat!

Argh my dh does this it drives me mad! Usually I've just caught the end of what he's said yet that's the bit he repeats?!

My dp does this. To make it worse, I have profound hearing loss and the pointlessly repeated half sentence is often accompanied by an irritated sigh, as if I am just being a nuisance. It seems to be getting worse. I've explained that it's not only annoying but makes me feel like shit but it seems to make no difference, I get an apology but then it continues to happen.

DH does echolalia all the time. Now that is a serious pita.

My mum does this. But then repeats a bloody irrelevant word.

Mum: Mumble mumble mumble chicken pox mumble mumble

Me: Sorry, I missed that. What DD you say?

My mum does that thing where she'll say something but start mumbling half way through so I don't hear the second half. Like:

Oh did you hear, on Tuesday we went to mutter mutter mutter

So then I say something like "sorry where did you go on Tuesday?" to show I heard the first bit properly.

then she repeats herself, but only the first bit.

Which I've already shown that I heard.

So then I have to ask her to repeat the second bit, by which time she's forgotten what it was anyway.

DH will answer 'yes' to a question with a choice in it.

Or he'll suddenly blurt out a random word & I've got to work out what's going on in his head.

DH: Twenty quid

Me: Eh?

DH: Twenty quid. You asked.

Me: Eh?

DH: Becky. Charges twenty quid for nails. You asked me to ask.

Me: I asked you six weeks ago.

DH: Well. Twenty quid.

I have a problem where I lose track easily, if I get interrupted half way through a sentence or story I have to start again from the beginning. But when I get interrupted again by them saying "you've already told me this bit", it puts me off and I have to start all over again.
It drives me and my family insane

Argh, DH was doing that earlier. I was in the back seat of the car, his sister was in the passenger seat. They kept chatting but I was struggling to hear much of the conversation. Every now and again, he'd ask me "is that OK?"

I'd reply "is what OK?" and get a nonsensical part sentence repeated such as "the kebab?"!?

Absolutely right! Why has no one sorted this. I've poor hearing and anywhere with background noise I get about 25% of the conversation. Subtitles would change my life.

iklboo I have to confess, I do that on occasion. Maybe DH and I were talking but then in a pause in the conversation my thoughts wander a little. Or maybe I see something that starts me thinking. Anyway, I forget that DH isn't privy to what's going on in my head, and assume that he is following my train of thought, so just say the relevant bit out loud.

DH is getting used to it (finally) and sometimes can even fill in the blanks himself!

Actually, that reminds me of a short story I once read, maybe by Edgar Allen Poe, with a guy who used logic to work out what someone was thinking, following thought associations and using external clues (like looking at the sky meaning they were thinking about the weather), and then answered a question they hadn't yet asked. Does that ring a bell with anyone?

My DH has hearing loss & wears hearing aids, he can't understand me at all unless he has them in (& switched on, battery working!)So I am quite patient with him. Does he reciprocate with me? Not a bot of it! He gets tetchy because my hearing is diminishing with age. He'll walk ahead of memumbling & then gets cross because I can't hear. Or I'll be in the kitchen with the dishwasher going & radio on, cooking & he'll say something from the other room (ranty rant lol )

I do echolalia too, I immediately repeat things I hear if they sound a bit unusual for some reason. It's like trying on clothes, I want to see how it feels to say it. And delayed echolalia, if someone says something that sounds like a well-known phrase or song, I finish it off to make it 'sound right'.

Chronically - you might be thinking of Sherlock Holmes - in one of the original stories, he finishes Watson's train of thought, having observed what Watson had been looking at, changes in expression, deducing what had led him where in his head etc.

DH is sort of the reverse - he won't have heard what's been said (usually in a conversation that doesn't include him - me telling the DCs to do something, say) and then go "Who? What? When? Why?". So I have to repeat a really tedious thing I've already said when the moment's passed and it doesn't bloody matter anymore.

HelsBels I'm guilty of that- repeating myself. I say, I'm guilty of that- repeating myself. (I mean it & I feel daft when I do it, but I can't help myself, I think it's a form of nervousness)
