To go to the gp again even though I went yesterday?

I had an appointment with the nurse practitioner yesterday for a very sore throat. I can't eat or drink without a lot of pain, even breathing through my mouth hurts.

The nurse said my throat was very inflamed with yellow spots but because my temp was 36 I didn't need antibiotics.

The thing is I very rarely get a fever, even when I've had a raging chest infection needing steroids. My normal temperature is 37.5 and when I'm ill it tends to drop to 36.5 or less. I tried to tell the nurse this but my throat hurts to talk and she wouldn't listen.

I've hardly slept the last two nights because my throat hurts so much and it s swollen it feels like I'm choking. TMI alert but it even hurts to swallow spit so sometimes I've had to spit into a tissue and this morning there's streaks of blood in it.

Would ibu to try and see a gp today even though I saw the nurse yesterday?

See the GP!! I had a quinsy throat and it was the most painful thing I have ever experienced. You need some painkillers at the very least.

Not unreasonable at all, the blood is a new symptom and one that definitely needs checking out. Let us know how you get on

Agreed see the gp again, its shocking how few people including hcp,'s realise that a low temp is an illness indicator just as much as a high temp. My eldest is the same, always drops v low when ill rather than high.

my husband had quinsy and ended up with an emergency admission to hospital. It can restrict your breathing so much it can be dangerous. Please go back, or to A and E!

My DD and I never get temperatures when ill. A locum GP missed DD's scarlet fever because she didn't have a fever, and instead treated her for an allergic reaction :-/ (fortunately saw our own GP the next day who correctly diagnosed).

37 degrees C is an average and it will vary. Low temp and sore throat can go together. You need to see a doctor as your breathing is difficult. I find a soluble pain killer really helps me.

Yes go see the doctor I had the same situation with the nurse practitioner and mine turned out to be a quinsy too. To be fair the dr nearly missed it too. He had printed me a prescription and as I was leaving he asked me to wait whilst he fetched someone else who confirmed it was a quinsy.

Also get some hydrogen peroxide from the chemist to dilute and gargle

Your Temp can go down as well as up with an infection. Demand to see a GP, you have suffered enough.

Of course YANBU to go back to the GP if symptoms are worsening! In the meantime try some soluble aspirin, it's an anti-inflammatory so might bring down some of the swelling as well as helping with the pain a little. Stop if the bleeding gets worse though.

There is the Centor criteria for antibiotics which the GP will also follow, here:

I do think you should go back though if you are struggling that much. Try gargling soluble asprin and get some Difflam spray.

my husband had quinsy, and ended up as an emergency admission to hospital due to compromised breathing! I would def go back - good luck!

Go back to the doctor. Have you had any dental work recently? Four years ago I had an ulcer from where the dentist was holding my tongue out of the way at the back of my throat. Over two days it got more and more sore. I went back and she said it was okay, bound to be sore etc. It got to the point where I couldn't swallow without crying, couldn't speak properly (they call it 'hot potato mouth'). I dosed up and went to bed but woke up at 2am with a red mark tracking down the outside of my neck. I drove myself to hospital (wtf). Ended up being admitted straight away, on morphine, IV anti-biotics etc. I was in for 3 days, with Ludwig's Angina. It's very rare and I was very lucky. Bloody dentist said "why didn't I tell her how bad it was". Errrr. I tried.

YANBU. Go back today and see a GP. I thought that pus in throat automatically = infection and antibiotics? Always has when I have taken dd there. The nurse sounds rubbish. Hope you feel better soon.

YANBU - go back and see a GP. Write down your temp issue so that you don't have to try and talk about it.

My mum had a naturally low temp (think it was about 97 deg F) and she got a haematoma in her c-section scar that was missed for a couple of days because her temp only went up to 99.5 - nothing in the general way, but bad for her - when they realised, she was sorted, but it left her with worse scarring than she otherwise would have had.

Go back - ds' temp often drops when he's ill. I knew that he had scarlet fever the other week but because his temp was low (35.6) the doc argued virus and wouldn't give him antibiotics. I insisted on a swab and got a phone call 4 days later to say it was scarlet fever and to go pic up meds.

I had a throat that sore -hurt to breathe - with flu. It's a virus so antibiotics would have been pointless. Codeine cough syrup helped the pain, and salt-water gargle.

I had this a couple of weeks ago and had antibiotics prescribed over the phone. Temperature wasn't even mentioned. I'd ring them again. It's do frightening not being able to swallow even your own saliva. I was the same.

Go back. My son dips low and it's dangerous. He was at 34.8 (I'll never forget that) and some dumb nurse in hospital told me a low fever wasn't to be concerned about. Demanded a Dr and he was admitted. I mean this is basic stuff. Furious.
Hope you get better fast op, sounds like some serious antibiotics needed

Go to the Dr's,the yellow spots usually mean an infection and for that you will need antibiotics don't leave it OP.One of my nieces left it for a few days and ended up having Quinsy and was rushed into hospital.
Fingers crossed yours isn't that bad but I'd get it checked out today.
