to hate having a January birthday

I know I'm being unreasonable, I know I'm lucky to have presents, I know I'm an adult, I know you're most likely going to give me a kicking and I deserve it.
I've just opened presents from friends and family ( not husband and children)and I've just been given everyone's Christmas cast offs regardless of whether I would like it or not. Including slippers two sizes too big. I promise I'm not being grabby I'd rather just get a card or some home made jam. I don't even mind a bit of re-gifting as long as the present fits the person. It is the thought that counts and I don't think they have actually thought about me they've just wrapped up any old thing.
Give me a good slap to cheer me up or tell me the terrible presents you've received.

I think there should be a law whereby if you are born in the eight weeks leading up to or after Xmas, you are permitted to celebrate it on a different date of your choice.

My mum has hers on 2 Dec, her dad's was 21 Dec, my dad's is 24 Jan and mine is the beginning of March. Be better if we could spread them out a bit.

My birthday is in july and I often dont get presents at all. Probably not close enough to christmas

Yanbu. My dd has a January birthday, and I have stopped hosting parties for her as while parents try to pass off crap Christmas presents, turns out four year olds- not so much.

"I had that for Christmas" repeated by a dofferent child in the group as each gift is opened.

My brother's is on Sunday, 31st January
We stopped gifts a long, long time ago but still send cards

Me, one of my children and five other family members have their birthday in January/Feb.

Sometimes it snows on my birthday so that is lovely. I'm really tempted to go gift free but it seems mean spirited to suggest it after MY birthday.

That sounds awful. DD1's birthday is in Jan, and I must say we haven't seen any obvious re gifting, and it's always been special.

YANBU, I planned my DD around having a summer birthday! Me and DH have summer birthdays and I would hate to have one in winter for the reasons you have said.

YANBU my ds2 is born two weeks after Christmas and it always gets overlooked by others or no one turns up to his birthday party. This year he's having a half birthday!

Half birthday sounds like a good idea. I actually got thoughtful gifts from some of the school mums who came round for coffee this morning. I don't know them that well and wasn't expecting anything but they brought daffodils, a chocolate bar, voucher for tea etc. My lovely parents have just arrived with two creme eggs. Much more my style!

I'm right at the start of Jan- it's rubbish! When i was younger we'd always just gone back to school and in later years and at uni, there was pretty much always exams on my birthday. Everyone's skint so doesn't want to do anything. Glad none of my DC have a birthday so close to Christmas!

I have several late December/early January birthdays in my family and, actually, although most of the presents come from the sales, that just means they get better gifts than they would have done if there were no sales.

My birthday is in April, and Easter often falls around (or even on) my birthday. When it's at Easter I get Easter Eggs as birthday gifts, when it's not at Easter I get barely anything at all. So the eggs are a bonus gift, not a conciliatory one.

My husbands birthday is the 24th of January and, honestly, money is tight then. Then our wedding anniversary is Valentine's Day...money is still tight and everything is just a little more expensive because of the date.

DH's is New Year's Day. You can guess what happens there... although to be fair he is a pain in the arse to buy presents for anyway

I hate my November birthday, even as I child got less than my siblings as my parents were buying Christmas stuff.

This was done (recently). Consensus was that January birthdays suck, the 2nd is the worst and having a second birthday at another point in the year was a good idea.

I Love my late January birthday!! I Never get presents on the day and usually get them a few weeks later in February and the very few people that remember to do this seemsto feel guilty for having spent all of their money on Xmas so I usually get presents I actually like. And DH likes to treat me to a surprise getaway which is "Happy Birthday/Valentines" and I love the soppy mess that is Valentines. Its a Win/Win!

I went back and re-read the op, I completely missed the cast off Christmas presents bit...that's not on! I don't do re-gifting either. I think you have every right to be feeling disappointed, maybe half birthdays will catch on?

I have a Burns Night birthday. I've generally done quite well out of sale bargains. I always liked having something to look forward to after Christmas when I was a kid. And a winter birthday means you don't tend to waste time worrying about the weather - you know it's going to be rubbish so you plan accordingly although there isn't enough snow in this country, boo hoo

I think you should either ask for what you want or acquire some less skinflint friends TBH.

My DD always had a half birthday when at school.
Even this year at 18, she is having her party 3 1/2 weeks after her actual birthday.
