Is this wine vintage or just gone ofF?

So my mum won a hamper, it had three bottles of wine in it. One of which was decidedly dodge, the other was pink and it gave me wind. This one has 1999 on the bottle and tastes, well it tastes different.

It isn't an unpleasant taste but i have no idea if it is "corked", off or "vintage"

Should i finish the bottle? or chuck it down the sink?

If it upsets your gut and tastes more vinegar than wine it's off. It shouldn't be foul. Very dry is good, in a dry wine of course, but if it would do well on chips bin it and await the skitters Confused

Vinegar is off. Weird and not right might be corked.

What is the wine? Label photo? Could find the tasting notes...

Chateau la trielle bordeux blanc

It just doesn't seem to have any guts - i think its corked but i have no idea what corked is supposed to taste like, i usually drink wine with a screw top Blush

It's not a wine I know, but I would be very surprised if a 1999 White Bordeaux is anything other than past it.

"Corked wine gives off a smell that is similar to a dank moldy basement, a wet newspaper or a wet dog." Grin

Screw tops are great. Prevent this exact thing!

FurryDogMother · 03/01/2016 18:45

Yeah, nothing wrong with screw tops, some of the best wine comes with them nowadays.

If it doesn't taste great; don't drink it!

I'm on Dry January so virtual wine is perfect. And, no migraine.

DiscoSpider · 03/01/2016 18:59

My mum was violently ill from some off wine at Christmas.

TheoriginalLEM · 03/01/2016 19:06

I've had two bottles of corked wine recently, one in a bar (my boss was buying and took care of it) and one at home.

The distinctive smell is like leaf mould.

Like wet leaves have been under a tree for a long time.

Anyway, if it's not nice then don't drink it, even if you're not sure WHY you don't like it.

I too have had tummy issues from bad wine. DP didn't believe me, finished it and ended up off work with the trots Grin

At the Millenium, I got heavy metal poisoning from some dodgy wine, as did a bunch of other people at the same party - mind you, it was from a country not known for its viticulture, so was probably heavy on the anti-freeze as well. I think if it doesn't taste right to you, sling it - not because anything's wrong necessarily, but if it's not pleasant to you, why bother? (NB Most certainly not suggesting you are being poisoned by heavy metals!
Ah, those jokes about Iron Maiden - they went on for months Grin)
