DH forgot to take the sloes out for 2.5 years, just strained it.
Says it makes it taste better?
Surely it ruins the alcohol?
Thought you were meant to leave it for as long as poss ONCE sloes been taken out.
Dread to think...smells okay but I don't trust it!

It'll be fine.

MuttonDressedAsMutton · 30/12/2015 21:28

It will be absolutely fine - the alcohol is a preservative. It can only improve with age.

cardibach · 30/12/2015 21:31

Can't think what problem it would cause. YABU girl not drinking sloe gin for 2.5 years, though.

Chamonix1 · 30/12/2015 21:31

That's what he says, but I've read after a year the sloes ruin the alcohol and the improvement of taste is storing it for as long as possible with sloes out.
He seems happy anyway Grin

FOR not drinking, not girl.

LaurieFairyCake · 30/12/2015 21:38

It's fine

I'm drinking some now

Junosmum · 30/12/2015 22:16

YABU, sloe gin is lovely. It won't have ruined it. Try a little bit and see!

Mrsmorton · 31/12/2015 09:25

Don't forget to put cider on the floes and leave them til for 24 hours. As long as you don't need to see out of both eyes any time soon they are delicious.

Dipankrispaneven · 31/12/2015 10:19

If your worry is about taste, surely all you need to do is to try tasting it?

limitedperiodonly · 31/12/2015 10:20

Alcohol is a preservative. Didn't they bring Nelson's body home in a barrel of rum?

Wouldn't have drunk that though.

Chamonix1 · 31/12/2015 10:29

It tastes fine, just very strong. I was more concerned it'd make me
I'll somehow as nobody else seems to leave the sloes in for 2.5 years, I wonder why...

Nelson’s Blood

This blend of rum and spices is made to commemorate the drinking of the rum from around the body of Admiral Lord Nelson on the journey from Trafalgar to Gibraltar by sailors wishing to benefit from some of his ‘spirit’.

Nelson’s Blood is a warming drink with some bite and is best drunk on its own.

I'd want a drinking buddy with me in case I needed to be put in the recovery position Wink

The advice I've read is to steep the fruit for as long as you can bear to wait. I do this with damsons and the flavour isn't quite as complex as it should be until they've steeped for a year at least.

Am currently re-fermenting a gallon of cider over the gin-soaked damsons. Sadly I'm pg so won't get to find out what it's like for a while but am looking forward to it in due course Grin

What do you think is going to happen if you leave the sloes in for longer OP?
