Baby in laundry basket in bath

Just see.n this going round on Facebook as a great safety tip. Put baby in a laundry basket in the bath. Apparently the baby will find it easier to sit up if they slip over. Wtf! The whole thing could go over trapping baby underneath, there is still enough water to drown in, it actually increases the risk of slipping or tripping Imo. Why not, I don't know, supervise your baby in the bath like a normal person!

Same, I thought it was just to give them a bit more stability and keep toys nearby?

I thought it was so the toys wouldn't float off too. Surely anyone would know to still supervise a baby while in the bath?

If the baby tries to stand the basket will tip. Banged head. Drowned baby. Stupid idea.

It's a really good idea- I did this when mine were little. Can't see the problem...

The post I have seen talks about something other than the "slick bathtub walls" for the baby to pull themselves up on if they get into difficulty. Surely if you were there you can just hand then a toy that has floated away?

Only stupid if you're daft enough to leave the child alone. I think it's an excellent idea; better than spending lots of money on a special seat.

It's not to replace an adult supervising, it's to contain the toys the baby is interested in and stop them having to over reach. Like a baby bath.

So it's like some sort of tiny boat for the baby to sit in?? Bizarre.

I find putting a non slip shower mat in the bath helps baby to not slip over, and the extra grippiness helps them to sit up as well.

My nearly 7 month old is terrible in the bath. He loves it but he slips and slides kicks his feet up twists he get's really into it.
I would use the laundry basket tip to make my life easier and safer for ds. ATM he has very shallow baths as otherwise it's unsafe.

The 'stop drowning' thing is a bit silly. It just stops them doing that dramatic slide that might panic them and stop them enjoying baths.

Calm down crazy pet lady. I criticised the Facebook post not you. My ds has always been like that in the bath I've always kept the water shallow for him. He's 3 now! Nothing wrong with a shallow bath.

Maybe people should stop believing everything they see/read on facebook.
It can be an easy way to stop baby loosing the toys in the tub freeing mums hands up to support him.
But its not a way to prevent baby from drowning that is just madness.

The original idea was to keep toys with reach. Not to replace adults supervision or stop drowning.

Some people are idiots and slapped their own thing on it.

The one I saw said something like 'this is the best idea ever - bathe babies in a laundry basket so they can grab onto it if they start to slide under the water. Such a simple idea that could save so many lives!'

I thought exactly the same as you, OP. All babies should be supervised anyway.

My 15 month old is still bathed in a baby bath that we put it the big bath to stop it tipping over when she stands up. Uses less water than running a full bath and her toys are kept within her reach.

I saw it today and thought the same - it says something about how it could save 'countless' babies lives, WTAF?!

My toddler hasn't had a bath in years... She hates the bath!

When ds was little, he had a little seat that suckered on to the bath, so he could sit up. And I sat on the loo seat, watching him and passing escaped toys.

It looks like a terrible idea. No safety benefits whatsoever. Really quite stupid.
Laundry baskets can be brittle and break easily with sharp edges.
Its adding an unstable casing for the baby.
Non-slip mats are useful to help stop sliding.

I bought an ikea 'baby' elephant bath and my 28 month old still fits in it!
