To be immensely irritated by the 'still not drinking nothing' ads

Everytime I hear the advert for Dryathlon on the radio or TV it makes my teeth itch.

It's a worthy cause but 'not drinking nothing' means 'drinking something'

Surely they could get that bit right.

YADDDDNBU.

I hate double negatives. "I ain't got none" is a particular bugbear of mine.

BanningTheWordNaice · 24/12/2015 12:35

Haha YANBU. I barely drink but those ads make me want to reach for a bottle and smash it over the head of whoever made that jingle.

StillMedusa · 24/12/2015 13:13

Ahh it's not just me then Grin

I find myself shouting at the radio 'It's a double negative you fuckwit!'

MushroomMama · 24/12/2015 13:14

He also sounds drunk as a pirate!

BluePancakes · 24/12/2015 13:30

Yep hate the advert for all the above reasons.

I don't mind double negatives - when they're used correctly. Otherwise the speaker just sounds like an uneducated idiot.

Can a double negative be used correctly?

BluePancakes · 24/12/2015 13:40

Yes, eg "I don't dislike that" might convey surprise at not-hating something you thought you would. It doesn't mean that you particularly like it, but that it was ok. [Not sure I'm describing this right, but was the first example I thought of.]

CatOutOfHell · 24/12/2015 13:47

I think YANBU itself is the best example of a double negative being used effectively!

BluePancakes · 24/12/2015 13:49

^^What Cat said. Grin

Fallulah · 24/12/2015 13:58

I hate the way the words don't fit the rhythm of the song at the end. Shoddy jingle writing!

AbiBranning · 24/12/2015 14:02

I always add gin to then end to make it rhyme better. But yes can't stand it's double negatives too, generally crap and.
