Just a quicky.

I have bought my Girfrliend a beautiful white gold necklace for Christmas, however I am 99% sure that the chain will be to short.

I didn't have enough money to buy a longer one but will after Christmas.

AIBU to buy her something she might not be able to enjoy on Christmas day?

Have they given you the right chain if it's too short? That length should be fine on anyone.

I'm larger than your GF and an 18" chain is perfect for me. :-)

Your neck will almost certainly be bulkier than your girlfriend's unless she has thyroid issues which have given her a goitre. If she doesn't, then her neck is unlikely to be as big as yours, so just because it doesn't fit you comfortably, that's not a reliable sign that it won't fit her.

Get the extender - if the necklace is white gold then can you not take it with you to have a look at the extenders, and see which suits it better? Gold will probably work better than silver, I would say (warmth of tone) but not ideal still. Alternatively, as others have said, give it to her as is and then say "I can get a longer chain if you prefer it to hang lower".

Lockets, if they're large, probably look better on a slightly longer chain - but you're not going to know where it sits on her until she tries it on, or what her preference is - so realistically you're going to have to wait and see how she feels about it!
