To not go to DH's work do

More of a WWYD I suppose. Tonight is DH's work do. It's a large, multi-national company and it's always quite a grand affair, somewhere very posh, everyone dresses up, three course sit down meal, dancing etc. They put everyone up in a hotel in a central location as there's lots of different teams scattered around the country so after the main event ends everyone meets back at the hotel bar and it tends to go on til the early hours. You get the idea. It's quite formal, DH likes some of his colleagues but none of them really socialise together and certainly aren't mates so everyone is always on their best behavior.

Anyway, we live three hours from the city where the party is taking place so thought we might as well get here early and make a day of it. Unfortunately, after lunch I suddenly started throwing up. I was having to run in and out of pubs, coffee shops etc so we went back to the hotel. Then I started with the other end Blush Since then I've been stuck in the hotel bathroom. I feel like death.

We're due to meet everyone to head to the venue in a couple of hours. DH has said don't worry if you're not up to going but he hates these formal events so I know he'll hate going alone although he'd never put pressure on me. Mostly, im really worried that if I don't go his bosses will think I've basically come along for a free night in the hotel and to take advantage of the facilities. Obviously, that's not the case. I'd much rather be at home but I can't very well hop on a train in this state.

I just can't stand the thought of getting dolled up and spending all night making polite small talk with people I hardly know in between running back and forth to the bathroom, let alone having to sit down to a big meal. But I don't want to embarrass DH or make things difficult with his work colleagues.

What would you do?

Get into bed, put the tv on and make sure DH gets you plenty bottled water before he goes.
That's it.

reallybadidea · 05/12/2015 16:47

I wouldn't even consider going. You'll give it to everyone else for a start. Stay back at the hotel, watch some trashy TV and look after yourself x

BackforGood · 05/12/2015 16:48

Y would BU to go! Shock

You can't go and share that with everyone! No-one will thank you for it.
Obviously you have to stay in your room.

knaffedoff · 05/12/2015 16:49

Stay in your hotel and get well soon x

mintoil · 05/12/2015 16:49

Clearly you cannot go. You might have something contagious for a start and there could be pregnant women at the do.

I hope you feel better soon Flowers

TheLambShankRedemption · 05/12/2015 16:51

Do not go. Your husband's colleagues will not thank you for D&V just before Christmas.

TheWitTank · 05/12/2015 16:54

FGS woman don't go! Go to bed and rest. Don't feel guilty, it's not like you wanted to be sick. I would actually be more pissed off as one of you DH colleagues if I found out you were vomiting and then came along. Nobody wants a nasty bug. Get well soon.

WeAllHaveWings · 05/12/2015 16:54

I'd stay in room and send dh alone. Its his work colleagues so he should be ok, but if he really hates it he can make excuses and leave early-ish.

His bosses wont think you'd prefer to spend the night alone quarantined in a hotel room when there's free grub, booze and entertainment on offer, but your dh needs to show face.

Sparkletastic · 05/12/2015 16:56

Don't be bonkers of course you can't go. Get thee to bed with water.

MissingPanda · 05/12/2015 17:00

YANBU not to go. YWBVVVVVVU to go because you risk infecting the other people and, as pps, have said you risk passing it along to them.

TeaFathers · 05/12/2015 17:03

don't go. you're sick.
tbh you'll piss everyone off if you turn up and give it to everyone else.
no-one wants to be sick in the run up to xmas and you'll be tagged as the one who passed it on. and they'll remember it and you at the next xmas do, too.
rest and get well soon.

OSETmum · 05/12/2015 17:05

You can't possibly go! Get yourself to bed and stop worrying.

Stripyhoglets · 05/12/2015 17:07

Do not go!

ScouseQueen · 05/12/2015 17:08

I am suffering with a very similar bug and there's no way I could go to a function. Plus they're highly contagious and, as pp said, you'll infect a load of other people which is just grim before Christmas. Get him to get those sports drinks that are rehydrating and have electrolytes in and whatnot - there will be a shop nearby that will sell them along with soft drinks. You'll need those with D&V. Then pack him off to the do. Poor you.

specialsubject · 05/12/2015 17:18

what a shame - but as everyone says, it would be very anti-social to go even if you did feel up to it. it's not just the pregnant who don't want to catch these bugs.

People are generally reasonably sensible and will understand why you aren't there.

BTW your husband should be washing his hands like mad and minimise any hand shaking. Before he goes, get him to stock you up with bottled water, a few salty/sugary items should you feel like eating, and make sure both your mobiles are charged.

GreenPotato · 05/12/2015 17:20

Just tell DH to be honest, you cam with him but developed a bug and feel terrible. Good excuse for him to leave early too if he wants to. People get ill, especially this time of year, they'll understand. Even if they do think you blagged a free stay, it's not the end of the world is it? I'm sure they will be preoccupied with the do though. Go next year and apologise for what happened, and they will all have forgotten about it.

Don't make yourself go through the do when you're so ill. Not only would it be terrble for you, you'd risk spreading the bug. You owe it to them, and all their families just before Christmas, not to go.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 05/12/2015 17:25

No, you can't go
I rang our GP surgery recently to make an appt. and they put me on hold with a message on loop not to go in if suffering from D&V - they've obviously had a recent outbreak.
These things spread like wildfire
Have a nice night in watching the telly - as nice as possible when you're ill Flowers

rollonthesummer · 05/12/2015 17:33

How would his bosses even know you were there?

Don't go- no one will thank you for infecting them.

ThreeRuddyTubs · 05/12/2015 17:36

I'd be fucked off if I went to my Xmas do and found out someone went with d&v. Stay in the hotel room

80sWaistcoat · 05/12/2015 17:43

Tuck yourself up warm and it gives DH perfect excuse to leave early to check up on you.

P1nkP0ppy · 05/12/2015 17:44

Unless of course you're prepared to infect everyone else and spend the evening trotting to and fro to the loo, not a good impression for dh's boss

Keep your fingers crossed DH doesn't get it too!

Jux · 05/12/2015 17:54

You really can't go. They won't thank you for possibly passing on whatever horrible d&v thing you've got either.

yorkshapudding · 06/12/2015 12:21

Thank you all. I took your advice, stayed in the hotel room and slept for 12 hours. Feeling almost human now but looking forward to getting home to my own bed. Can't believe I even contemplated going, would have been ridiculous! I think I must have been delirious or something Confused Thank you all for talking some sense into me!
