Surely by the time people have created a thread which lists all their symptoms, they could have peed on a bloody stick?

I do see your point but I remember when I was wondering if I was pregnant and was stuck at work and googling symptoms and estimating due dates and all that stuff and I really just wanted someone to talk about the possibility with in the absence of being able to get a firm answer.

They are just reaching out to share their concern/excitement etc and I don't think they really expect a confirmation or otherwise of an actual pregnancy.

But sometimes I do actually think the OP is expecting MN to offer a ClearBlue-style PREGNANT or NOT PREGNANT

I find them pointless... We all go take a test many hours later op comes back saying she tested and it was pos or neg. nothing we said would change the outcome.

I think people who post those threads realise that. They aren't stupid.
As Killairno said, maybe they can't get out to buy a test, or they are scared to, or they just want to share with someone.

If someone is excited but unable to test and just wants to witter on about a delicious maybe, that's fine. But I think it helps if the poster actually says that, rather than just asking if they are/are not.

Yes, I completely agree. I think those are the threads I meant when I said I'd seen and understood why they asked. The hand-holding type ones.

I got a false negative 3 days after my totm was due. It took til 6 days past til I got a faint positive.

A stick can't share that anecdote.

When I did my pregnancy test, I just couldn't register the result. I read the instructions over and over and clearly had 'the line' but just couldn't comprehend it lol! The lovely ladies at mumsnet confirmed it for me

I was sitting at work and it was ALL I could think about- even resorted to googling "Am I pregnant" and "online pregnancy test" knowing full well it was absolutely not going to be able to give me a proper answer!

Yes, perhaps making it clear that they want support and anecdotes rather than answers would be a better approach to such threads, though.

It's not just not being able to go out and buy a test; you get full technicolor photos with "Can you see a line"???? If you can't see it in person, it sure as hell won't look any clearer in a photograph...

When the test gets posted and everyone can see a line more often than not I am squinting away and can't see it.

There should be a rule that you can't start an 'Am I pregnant' thread until you have the test in your hand.

It's not fun when the Op says 'I can't go out to get a test til a week on Friday 'because all my leg bones have fallen out/no car/no shop/nobody to ask to pick one up' etc.....

I wasn't on MN when I had my two DC but if I was I may well have started a POAS thread, who knows. It is exciting to think you could be if you are trying and really want to be.

That's not a valid comparison. There are many, many people on here who have needed help, reached out for it and got some invaluable support. And quite rightly so. In those instances, MN actually helps. But when it comes to wondering if you're pregnant, there's only one way to get to the answer and it ain't posting on the internet.
