To expect neighbours to keep it the fuck down

I am very unfortunate in that the layout of my ground floor flat means that my bedroom is directly below the upstairs neighbour's living room. They have a brilliant sound system and are very loud mouthed, sweary and heavy footed. It's currently 11pm and I'm trying to get to sleep as I have work at 5am. It's hard enough to get enough sleep anyway as heavily pregnant.

They know that my bedroom is below them and they know I start work early because they have seen me leaving as they've been coming in from a night out. They have their sound system on full blast and are shouting at eachother over the tv so I can hear their conversation right now.

AIBU to think that people should be more considerate of the noise they're making late at night, especially in flats on a weekday?

Why NC?

Is your bedroom where the living room "should" be?

If so, Can you not swop your bedroom with your living room?

Have you tried having a civil word with them and asking if they could try and keep the noise down during the week?

Failing either of these ideas, get a good set of silicone disposable ear plugs. I use "macks", it's under £3 for a multipack.

May be revealing if one of them is a possible mumsnetter but I doubt it. Can't swap rooms because I have a fireplace in the living room and you have to go through the living room to get to the kitchen so wouldn't be practical. I have spoken to them previously and they said they would keep it down but because I'm fairly quiet and considerate I think they forget I'm here most of time. They also own their flat and I rent mine so there might be a 'I own it, I can do what I want' mentality.

It's been like this these past couple of nights, blasting movies or tv until 2 am and having loud conversations. I've got earplugs but i need to be able to hear my alarm for work. Not sure what step to take next if it doesn't calm down

Another polite request, then go to the council environmental dept regarding noise.

As a short term solution, get yourself some decent earplugs. Set your alarm to loud and you will hear it, even with them in.

It's very difficult. Really its the soundproofing at fault as they are entitled to have conversations, watch TV and walk around in their own house. Loud music is not on though. I would also suggest earplugs

I'm very conscientious about how much noise I make, especially late at night. When I have friends round and I think one of them is speaking too loud/getting giddy I tell them to keep it down and I always make sure my TV is loud enough just for me to hear it and I do the same with my radio. It's unnessecary to have it sounding like a cinema at midnight. It's not hard to turn down your TV and use inside voices when it hits 11pm. They do shout, they are very loud speakers (typically northern). Ear plugs won't be safe when I have a baby so will need to get environmental health involved if it doesn't quieten down.

I know that they are shouting because when I see visitors go in I can't hear them. It's not normal living noise

Are you accidentally waking them in the morning when you get up for work? It's not a tit for tat thing, is it?

be grateful you rent! Selfish buggers like this never improve. Try the council, and then if no luck you have the choice of leaving. I know it is not ideal to be driven out by awful neighbours but it happens.

BTW loud and northern are not synonymous.

I shouldn't be as I shower before bed so it's less noise. I just get dressed, leave quietly and have breakfast at work. I do genuinely think that they don't think I'm in half the time because I make sure not to make a lot of noise as I have neighbour's to the side of me with a newborn. Those neighbour's have said that they can hear their TV and them shouting but probably not as loud as I can.

I'm northern and I find most of us to be very loud and sweary speakers. I think it's the accent that makes it travel further I'm going to be moving into a house when baby is 6 months old or so. Really don't have the resources or the energy to move now as very heavily pregnant.

are the flats purpose build or conversion. i see a lot of threads like this and wonder if its coversion i guess the floors are thin? if purpose build i guess made on the cheap.

when i lived in flats the floors were solid and i used to have music on really loud. my neighbours did to. only time it could be heard was if someone opened the front door. it was a mix of elderly, young and familys in the block and never any complaints.

Purpose built, it does a good job of cancelling out the noise of their visitors since all I can hear is them because they're just generally loud people. My flat had been empty for a year before I moved in though so they're maybe not used to making normal levels of noise because there was no one to worry about. I guess some people are louder than others, slamming doors, shouting, pretending they're at the cinema whilst watching tv. I for one don't see the point of doing those things and would never do them

YANBU, they're are some selfish fuckers out there, I'm joined onto a couple of them. I had to get myself a Dohm noise machine (Amazon), probably the best £50 I've ever spent.

I don't mind so much now as I can easily catch up on sleep when I've finished work but once I've got a newborn I won't be polite to them about it. I'll give one of those a try, thank you stablemabel
