secret Santa budget

mommy2ash · 24/11/2015 11:07

So it was decided we would do secret Santa at work. Personally I would rather not but everyone else thinks it's great. An email was sent stating the budget is 20 euros. Am I really cheap or is that quite high for work? I have family members I'm not spending that much on

Id opt out that's ridiculous.

Janeymoo50 · 24/11/2015 11:12

Far too high, we never go over £5.00 and on one occasion we did a Pound Shop Secret Santa (I got some santa socks which were fab and purchased some false moustaches for my person, she loved them!!).

tictactoad · 24/11/2015 11:14

Way too high.

'Specially when secret Santa presents may not be greeted with quite the enthusiasm the Santa was hoping for still bitter after all these years

Opt out.

Smoothyloopy · 24/11/2015 11:20

That's high, £5 here.

hellsbellsmelons · 24/11/2015 11:22

We are the same here and I'm exactly like you.
Here it's £10-15
Not even spending that on some family members.
I feel a scarf coming on!

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 24/11/2015 11:23

Far too high. People have a danm cheek demanding figures at this time of year.
There are lots of loveley gifts you can buy for £5.

strawberryandaflake · 24/11/2015 12:13

£5 I'd say. Although I've only ever received one secret santa back. Grumph.

Minions · 24/11/2015 12:21

It's £10 here but we do it for charity instead of buying each other tat presents

AutumnLeavesArePretty · 24/11/2015 12:23

Ours is £10 as it's hard to find a none tat present for £5. We give ideas so it's not wasted.

Grilledaubergines · 24/11/2015 12:23

£10 here. Enough to get something decent enough, even if just a candle/scarf/drink etc. What's 20 euro, about £16/17? Too high I think.

ZoeTurtle · 24/11/2015 14:19

I don't see the point in this when you can only spend £5 (or £1, wtf!). All you can get is cheap tat that nobody will want or appreciate. Either do it with a budget that allows you to buy something the person will actually value, or don't do it at all.

pinklaydee · 24/11/2015 14:22

Ours has always been £5 - some people still spend less than that though!

slanleat · 24/11/2015 14:33

In our place we have a maximum of ten euro. I totally agree that twenty is too high.

chanie44 · 24/11/2015 14:36

Our budget at work is £5.

I've opted out this year (as I did with previous years). I know this sounds tight, but I have better things to spend £5 on. Whilst it's fun, I'm trying to move away from spending for spendings sake

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 24/11/2015 15:17

we do £5 all go in a sack to be handed out by 'santa' so you don't know who you are buying for so all gifts have to be suitable for men and women. yes a lot are just choc's, there are usually a saucy office mug or two but last year someone got a pineapple corer and was delighted, this year I have wrapped funky post it notes and a couple of very nice notebooks. I shopped early off e bay to find useful and slightly unusual design stuff. even if not exciting I know they will get used and rather them than choc,s.

MaxPepsi · 24/11/2015 15:26

Far to high.

Ours was a minimum of £5, maximum of £10.

I organised last years and plenty of people didn't join in. I asked if they wanted to join, if they said yes, I put their name down, if they said no, I just moved on.

Birdie85 · 24/11/2015 15:32

That's way too much, our limit is £5 - you don't want to be spending any more than that on a present for someone you probably don't know that well!

Bubbletree4 · 24/11/2015 15:36

£5-£10 is usual IME.

Lmdoli · 24/11/2015 17:34

£5-10 too

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 24/11/2015 17:38

Too high, especially if people go over.

Used to have a secret Santa at work, budget £5, I was the only person who stuck to the budget, and when we opened the presents as a group I was mortified at how cheap my present was :)

elf2 · 24/11/2015 17:45

They are usually £5-£10. Far too much scope for annoyance at £20!

I usually opt out (partly because I am part-time so often not there on the designated opening day but mainly because I just can't be bothered with it).

Just opt out.

chocadd1ct · 24/11/2015 17:47

Shock. we have £2.50. bit of a challenge but that is the fun bit.

Junosmum · 24/11/2015 19:06

Far too high. It's £10 here and I think that's too much I'm buying prosecco and chocolate as I know my person will at least enjoy those. I hate secret santa but don't want to be a humbug. The best year was when I got myself and instead of putting my name back in the hat I bought myself a lovely necklace - no one know to this day!

NotMeNotYouNotAnyone · 24/11/2015 19:21

We do £5, it's only jokey things or small things, there's 50 of us, you don't know everyone well enough to want to spend more on them. I'd opt out if it was £20 tbh and I LOVE all this christmas!

Scholes34 · 24/11/2015 19:46

£10 here too. Over the years it's been hit and miss. The best year was when I pulled my own name out the hat and didn't let on.

20 Euros isn't that much more than £10 really. A lot more than £5, though.
