Buy both. Eat both - for science. then decide and buy another one of the 'winner'

Tis the only way to be sure...

TheCunnyFunt · 23/11/2015 16:13

Agree with Alpaca. Cake is like nappies, what works for everyone else may not work for you, you need to try a few different ones before you find the perfect fit.

swisscheesetony · 23/11/2015 16:15

Rubbish. Battenburg is the clear winner in any cake competition.

racheyc · 23/11/2015 16:18

but I don't have time! its for dh birthday tomorrow and they both look nice but he will NOT be happy if I buy both as he hates fuss on his bday anyway. ive just heard the big fancy is a bit sickly and not like the small ones, which he loves

TheCunnyFunt · 23/11/2015 16:20

Get lots of small ones then and make a Fancy tower!

SanityClause · 23/11/2015 16:23

The nicest shop bought birthday cake is the M&S caterpillar. Get that one.

racheyc · 23/11/2015 16:27

ooh I like that idea!

OP posts:
pilates · 23/11/2015 16:29

I second the M & S caterpillar

NotNowBono · 23/11/2015 16:29

French Fancies are tiny now. You could make a Ferrero-Rocher 'ambassador' style pyramid and stick candles on them.

LetThereBeCupcakes · 23/11/2015 16:31

If you're short on time you need to buy 2 of each cake. Sample one of each. Present him with the unsampled version of the best one. Eat the other 3.

racheyc · 23/11/2015 16:32

is the caterpillar chocolate? were more of a vanilla sponge family!

OP posts:
pilates · 23/11/2015 16:36

Yes, chocolate sponge and buttercream.

TheCunnyFunt · 24/11/2015 21:02

What did you do in the end OP?

HackerFucker22 · 24/11/2015 21:33

For shop bought I only do m&s and I'm a vanilla sponge cake gal myself!!

Ai have recently perfected my own cake though. Delish.

frankie001 · 24/11/2015 23:11

The lamb is lovely. Brought it for my mum for last two birthdays, so I can eat it all!

Isabeau1980 · 24/11/2015 23:14

I love French Fancies and I have to say

Do Not Get The Big Pink French Fancy

Got one for my birthday a few years ago - big disappointment. The sponge was dry and the cream seemed as if it was put on with a razor blade.

Sad

I'd have given anything for a Tardis to go back and somehow stop myself.

Patapouf · 24/11/2015 23:52

French fancies are the devil, a giant one is the reincarnation of lucifer himself

HTH

MelcombeBingham · 25/11/2015 04:58

How long until the puritan sugar free "only home made here what about the salt" brigade turn up?
I would eat both

abbieanders · 25/11/2015 06:38

is the caterpillar chocolate? were more of a vanilla sponge family!

In that case, there's no help anyone can give you.

Bunbaker · 25/11/2015 06:45

The only shop bought cakes I would buy would be M and S as well. Mr Kipling cakes are sickly and artificial tasting. I wouldn't thank anyone for bringing me one for my birthday.

racheyc · 25/11/2015 09:26

got the lucky lamb from waitrose in the end as have heard too many bad things about the fancy! it was lovely :)
