Unlimited use of sunbeds

hi,

Today i was out shopping,there is an independent beauty shop in the local highstreet

in the window they were advertising sunbeds at 50p a go and unlimited sunbeds at £40 for a month.

I was a bit taken aback as thought this was really irresponsible to offer unlimited use due to the health concerns

doing the maths quickly 20 sessions minimum would make it £10 a week so to get your monies worth you would have to have 21 sessions a week Shock

i think the shop is wrong to offer this,some people wont take the advice on sunbeds and will probably make sure they get their money's worth

i know its up to them what they decide is enough for them but i still think this offer is wrong and the owner is thinking of the money not her clients health

maybe there is a disclaimer attached

what do you think ??

I'd refer that to Trading Standards, I think.

Sounds very odd and totally counter to the restrictions of the industry.

The users will be the 'dont use sunbeds because I now have cancer' stories in papers in the future - how did they NOT know sunbeds cause skin cancer Confused

YANBU. Are you sure you have that right? Who the hell wants to use a sunbed 80+ times a month?!

I think the 50p will have been for something like 2 minutes... In this scenario £40 would work out at 160 mins... Or

'Experienced' tanners will spend around 12 minutes on the beds per session.

No where near 21 sessions a week to get 'monies worth'. And they may well be ensuring people aren't being stupid by insisting people book in when they go (although I accept that some people think any sun bed use is stupid)

As along as ID is being monitored, to prove no children are going on it, I cant see the issue personally. It's up to individuals.

yeah im sure,looked again as i was so surprised

maybe the owner is hoping the client dosent do the maths

the trouble is some of the girls age 18 - 30 ish like the orange look and to me this will just make them go even more

but even though the times are very short compared to years ago with this offer they surely will be on them more than what is safe,whatever that is

yeah 50p isnt long but do that a few times and i think it's unhealthy,the bed etc are far far stronger than years ago

Is 'unlimited tanning' acceptable as a sales ploy?

The guidance they should all sign up to includes specific time lapse between sessions and maximum sessions per year... so 'unlimited' sounds wrong to me!

There is an EU directive to reduce the strength, not sure if it is in effect here yet!

Sunbeds outside strictly controlled medical applications should have been outlawed years ago.

(and before some twerp makes the usual comment, that doesn't mean outlawing sunshine!!)

It'll be 50p a minute. Most people do about 10 minutes a time. So spend on average 5 pound. 2 sessions a weeks and you've got your money's worth. I agree it's not good but it's not as silly as you're saying.

That's very worrying. Sunbeds are dangerous at the best of times. Encouraging people to use them either regularly or for long periods of time, is irresponsible and exposing them to a high risk of developing skin cancer.

It's not 50p a go, it's 50p a minute, so £40 is 80 mins, which for anyone who uses sunbeds very much is 8-10 sessions.

There will be small print that says it's limited to no more than one session per day.

Daft if you go for it, but cigarettes, alcohol and processed meat Grin are legal and your choice too.

so is it normal to use a sunbed 20mins a week

i admit i have only used one twice and that was years ago,they dont hold any interest for me thats why i was asking was it dangerous,as a non user it just stood out as alot

I've only used them for a skin complaint (and very effective they were too) but if you're wanting to develop a deep tan, 20 mins per week would be quite low. 10-12 mins, 2-3 times a week would be considered "normal" by TOWIE types I think.

You're all missing the plot, before we were all regulated and advised within an inch of our lives and not considered capable of making a decision without 'big brother' this would not even warrant a discussion. If you are over 18 do what you want!! They are not good for you, I used them to a silly degree when younger and have had treatment for sun damage but it was my choice, and I still stick with it, stop bloody nannying!!

Not missing the point at all oddly, but answering op's question. Yes it would be stupid to do it, butchered are all sorts of dangerous products and passtimes on the market for people to do or nor do as they wish. At least there is proper info and regulation for sunbeds, which you can't say about all of them.

Well you can buy unlimited fags. It's down to the grown-up to decide. I hate sunbeds (and fags) but if they're legal then it's about a person's judgement not telling them what to do.

I don't think that most people who use sunbeds, really do know just how dangerous they are. With cigarettes, people choose to ignore the risks and that is their choice (sort of, they are addicted after all), but I honestly don't think that people understand the risks associated with sunbeds. There is still a perception that a tan is healthy, and preparing your skin before a holiday is a good idea! Neither are true.

I use sun beds once a week in the winter months for 4 minutes.

I am not uneducated but in pain constantly with my knee, for some reason the heat gets right into the bones and for a few hours in pain free.

I do apply a factor 50 before using them and always use eye protection, I'm not even tanned and I don't wish to be.

I have RA.

They are not good for you in the way they will contribute towards you developing a melanoma and dying...

As a non sunbed user - do they have the same sort of warnings as cigarettes? Gruesome pictures of skin cancers in reception, health warnings on the beds? Do you need to sign a waiver?

Itsallgoingtobefine. They do have safety information and warnings up on the wall or on cards at sunbed shops. You usually have to sign in your details to say you are aware and there are limits on how long you can do.

there's only so much to be done. But you can't sell discount cigarettes (not legally, anyway) so perhaps it is discounting that should be outlawed. That way at least the Darwin-award lot contribute more to their medical costs.
