AIBU gas meter man

Following somebody elses doorway salesmen thread I thought I'd ask AIBU as I've been feeling guilty.
A man from the gas comapny knocked on the door to do a safety inspection of the gas meter in the front garden. He said
"I'm just letting you know what I'm doing so you don't worry and think You're going to be raped in your bed or whatever"
He did freak me out as my Oh was out and I was holding my son at the time.I have a big dog though that barks when people come to the door so I felt safe with my dog there.
I didn't report it but it's been playing on my mind as he could have been more than just a verbal weirdo and not everyone will have a dog/oh with them.
So AIBU to report this now or have I left it too late.

Yanbu. He was totally inappropriate

Welshmaenad · 02/10/2015 19:20

Ugh. That could have been horrifically triggering for someone who'd suffered sexual assault. Yes, I'd report it.

pigsDOfly · 02/10/2015 19:22

Well, he certainly has a way with words, doesn't he?

I suspect he probably meant well by letting you know he was there so you wouldn't wonder what was going on, but some people just have no idea that you just don't say thing like that.

I'd not bother reporting it for myself, but if it's bothering you then you should go ahead and report.

It is very inappropriate.

GirlOverboard · 02/10/2015 19:24

YANBU. That's really disgusting and creepy. I live alone and I'd be really freaked out if he'd said that to me.

TheBunnyOfDoom · 02/10/2015 19:26

Eugh, that's horrible. Report him. He should not be wandering into people's homes saying things like that.

Unreasonablebetty · 02/10/2015 19:34

WTAF? Who says things like that???..... I quite literally live with my foot in my mouth, but that's such an awful thing to say.. I wonder if it's something he knocks on everyone's door and says?!

Crazypetlady · 02/10/2015 19:40

I am going to report in the morning. I was thinking about him saying it to others so I think it has to be done.

That's horribly inappropriate. Do complain.

BuggersMuddle · 02/10/2015 20:40

Yes, inappropriate. I'm fairly bolshy, so I tend to challenge language there and then, but I live in a busy-ish area. I think I'd feel a bit a lot different, challenging tradesmen / utility works in the street if I was very isolated. Either way, the chance is past and even if he was just being a bit cack-handed (seems likely given he did his job and disappeared), he ought to get some feedback on his approach. I'd maybe not go in all guns blazing, but say it was good that he warned you he was there, but the way he did it was completely unacceptable and made you feel very uncomfortable.

I one encountered builders working on the neighbour's wall for the first time when I saw two ladders simultaneously appear in my garden (over the 8ft wall) when working from home. To say I was slightly disconcerted...

I would have liked notice. Not noticed couched in terms of 'don't worry, I'm not a rapist' though, because that would not put me at ease, to say the least!

KatFleas · 02/10/2015 20:46

certain people have no sense of decorum. Comments like that may be accepted as "banter" around his friends but is unacceptable to strangers.
I had a neighbor first day i met him he decided it was appropriate to inform me of his homophobic thoughts.
Yes you should complain, maybe then he will learn to actually be professional.

KingJoffreyLikesJaffaCakes · 02/10/2015 20:48

WTF?

Why would anyone think that's an okay thing to say??

I'd have had him removed.

WanderingTrolley1 · 02/10/2015 20:50

He needs some serious words.

Crazypetlady · 03/10/2015 09:35

I'm going to report now and see what they say. I hope he was from the gas company and hadn't just obtained a shirt.
Things must happen with meter readers and things though The sky engineer asked if we wanted to set up a password for him to give us to let him in.

Omg that's awful. It would scare me to death. He can't go round saying things like that.
