To hate those bastard letterboxes with bristles in them?

Just that really.

I had to deliver some single sheet flyers around our area for a local campaign. The choice seemed to be to end up with a load of flyers crumpled up like concertinas or having my knuckles scraped raw by the bloody bristles as I tried to protect the flyers by laying my hand on top to keep the bristles out of the way.

Bastard things.

(If it's draughts the owners are worried about do what we did and install a wooden flap on the inside).

I thought the bristly ones were to stop The Authorities from being able to peer through your letterbox at you?

I must start taking my meds again.

I wore a glove. Just the one.

Oh those bloody bristles. I had a summer job delivering the mail, bloody hated both bristles and houses where you couldn't predict whether the dog would be in the garden or in the house. And people who get all huffy when you don't want to go through their garden when there's a dog in there. "He wouldn't hurt a fly". Well you'd better hope so, as I'd have no option but to report a dog bite to my boss...

I don't get the thing about having a bristle letterbox to discourage leafletters though. I don't like getting leaflets but I put up a "no leaflets please" notice and that was enough to stop about 95% of leafletting, you don't need to be putting land mines on your front porch. I have nothing against leafletters and don't want to make their lives harder, just don't want to have to sort through all that stuff to find my mail.

We've got a bristle one but then we've also got a postbox by the side of the gate though some folk ignore it, open the gate walk up the drive then fight with the little brush letterbox Grin
Junk mail provides jobs too.
From the paper sellers through to designers, printers and the people that deliver it. Best get off my soap box Blush

I remember these from when I had a paper round. YANBU.

having been on both sides of this - heating costs money and bristles in the letterbox AS WELL AS an internal flap make a difference. The tricky bit is making sure that flaps don't bite fingers.

but if you are stuffing leaflets through doors, no sympathy. Put up posters if you want to tell people about things.

I cant stand the vertical letter boxes that barely open and you can fit naff all through them. They made my paper round as a kid hell lol

NorbertDentressangle · 28/09/2015 12:54

haha I should show DD this thread as she'd have loads of opinions to contribute on the pros and cons of different letterbox styles.

She started doing a weekly paper round for the local free paper. It's only to about 50 houses but each week she comes back with at least one story about a letterbox that's given her problems/a dog waiting behind the letterbox/draft excluders getting in the way/letterboxes that nearly trap your fingers when they snap back into place etc

paper round memories ... Vertical letter box with stiff hinge at top, and door knocker over it, so you have to lift that up to get access to the letter box. and at christmas they tie the holly wreath to the end of the door knocker.
Arrggghh!

toomuchtooold · 28/09/2015 17:40

Norbert has she got any of those dogs who stay absolutely dead silent until the paper is about 2/3 in and then go totally nuts tearing it apart? I had a few like that, scared the crap out of me the first couple of times, swear I could hear the buggers sniggering at me Grin

BoneyBackJefferson · 28/09/2015 18:33

I would have some sympathy if you weren't posted unsolicited rubbish through my letter box.
