Is this abuse? What can I do?

Next door are a lovely elderly couple in their late 70's, increasingly over the past 2 years the lady has been yelling and swearing very loudly at her husband. So loud that I have had to bring the DC inside so they don't hear the foul language.

What can I do? Should I do anything?

If it's a big change to how she used to be then she could be developing dementia.

Depending on your relationship with them you could discretely ask her if she is OK, or ask him if everything is OK?

Perhaps she or her DH has dementia or some other condition that has changed their personality and behaviour. I think you need to be understanding and keep an open mind. Can you maybe ask if they need any help with anything in a sort of "helpful neighbour" way and see what response you get?

Is there family around that you can chat to, or the Husband?

She may have a diagnosis and this may be part of the condition.

You could phone your LA Safeguarding Team, or Action on Elder Abuse 0808 808 8141.

The Husband may be rejecting help, or it could be that there isn't an easy answer to this.

Could it be he's become deaf, so she's having to shout louder? Maybe they've always swore at each other, but you can only hear it now.
