To think Jeremy Corbyn isn't that Left Wing?

He's the MP for Islington.
He went to posh school (independent prep school)
He's called Jeremy FFS.

The name and the school are presumably his parents' politics, so not necessarily his.

katemiddletonsothermum · 12/09/2015 19:12

Yes, but Islington? Trendy Guardian readers who embrace Hemsley & Hemsley (not a cheap cook book) and earn a fortune in the city in order to afford the 10 million pound maisonettes in the borough?

Cabrinha · 12/09/2015 19:13

You know that you're allowed to be educated and wealthy and still be left wing politically, yes? Confused

PermetsTu · 12/09/2015 19:13

I think it's probably his politics, not his background, that you need to look at.

Cabrinha · 12/09/2015 19:14

And is "Guardian reader" an indication of Not Left Wing?

BlueMoonRising · 12/09/2015 19:15

Op, you do know that politics is not the same as background... don't you?

MistressWeatherwax · 12/09/2015 19:16

Islington is home to some very financially deprived wards. Bits of it are posh, leafy etc, but bits of it are tough inner city estates.

He's been MP there for years. I don't think that was just the media-luvvies doing

CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 12/09/2015 19:16

Depends what you mean by left-wing as well.
I would consider him more left wing than Tony Blair.
I would consider him less left wing than Joseph Stalin.

HTH

JeffreysMummyIsCross · 12/09/2015 19:19

Do you have to have a name that's on the SWP's approved list, and live in a specified constituency to be left wing? And convince your parents by the age of five that you do not want to go to a prep school?

There are plenty of poor people in Islington, by the way.

cruikshank · 12/09/2015 19:20

As has already been pointed out, he's been MP for Islington for over 30 years, which dates back to a time before it was partially-gentrified, although a fair bit of it is still council estates and normal people, away from Upper St.

Anyway, no, he isn't particularly left-wing - he's a social democrat, which would put in a fairly central position compared to a lot of European politicians, although admittedly he must look like Trotsky incarnated to the USA.

Capewrath · 12/09/2015 19:20

He detested his selective boarding grammar. Not his responsibility where he went to school.

And utterly agree with blue moon. Why do you assume middle class ness cannot be left wing? "Working class " is often right wing. Think about Marx, Engels, Benn, Fenner Brockway, Keynes.

katemiddletonsothermum · 12/09/2015 19:21

Jay Joplin changed his name. His real name is Jeremy. I know this because he was at school with my brother and played a character called Juniper in the play "The Thwarting of Baron Bolligrew."

OP posts:
katemiddletonsothermum · 12/09/2015 19:22

DS thinks if Jeremy really wants to win the electoral vote then he should change his name to Stampy.

OP posts:
60sname · 12/09/2015 19:23

And the Pope isn't that Catholic.

BlueMoonRising · 12/09/2015 19:27

Who is Jay Joplin and what is the relevance?

katemiddletonsothermum · 12/09/2015 19:29

Posh bloke who used to be called Jeremy but changed his name to Jay so that he would appeal to the masses so that he would become one of the most important people in the art world and to go on to marry Sam Taylor Wood who then left him and got off with a much younger man and directed "Fifty Shades of Gray."

He should have stuck with Jeremy.#

OP posts:
BlueMoonRising · 12/09/2015 19:31

And what is the relevance?

thehypocritesoaf · 12/09/2015 19:31

Posh people can be very left wing- why not?

Disclaimer, I don't think jc is super posh- he's lefty middle class type.

Vinorosso74 · 12/09/2015 19:41

He's more left wing than most Labour MPs at the moment. Agree with other comments his upbringing doesn't mean he can't be left wing and working class can be right wing. Not my favourite name at all but not
his fault.
He's my MP for Islington North and he's a good MP too. Way more honest than most. This is an area with some of the highest levels of deprivation in the country so definitely not posh. Like all of inner London there are extremes either way.
Good luck to him.

thehypocritesoaf · 12/09/2015 19:43

Karl Marx was the son of a wealthy lawyer and now rests in one of the most expensive areas of londonSmile

No one says he wasn't left-wing.

ImMarriedtoMyHusbandsBalls · 12/09/2015 19:44

I do.

Cabrinha · 12/09/2015 19:47

But what's your point? That he should hide his real name to try to "market" himself better? Is that what you want from a politician?

If you want to say "he's not that left wing because of his view on xyz" then fill your boots. But you can't accuse someone of not being left wing because of a name they were given almost before (possibly before!) they were even born. "FFS".

OneDay103 · 12/09/2015 19:50

Op tried to create some outrage here then realized its not working and has resorted to making it lighthearted with jokes instead.

katemiddletonsothermum · 12/09/2015 19:53

OneDay103

.... er... no.

OP posts:
Garrick · 12/09/2015 19:55

ImMarriedtoMyHusbandsBalls, you reckon the author of the Communist Manifesto wasn't left-wing? Just how far out is your left wing? Confused
