I've been trying to gain weight since I was a teen, always hated the way I looked (too skinny, no shape at all). I'm definitely not malnourished as I eat a balanced diet, plus extra protein and because I'm trying to gain weight allow myself to indulge in carbs and sugars.
Yet for some unknown reason, I still look ridiculously skinny. My BMI is 18.6, so I'm barely in the healthy range. (I'm 5 ft 6 and 52 kg).

Recently, I decided to use a calorie counter to see if I'm eating enough and was so shocked to find out I'm eating 400 calories less than what is required just to maintain my weight. (FYI - 1582 calories are required daily and I eat on average around 1100). I find this rather confusing as I'd always thought I'd eaten more than most of my friends and normal healthy sized people in general, (i.e. always finishing my food at restaurants, never restricting myself with what I eat, eating at least 3/4 meals a day with lots of snacks)

So, I was wondering what on earth do 'normal' healthy sized people eat?! How many calories do you roughly consume daily?

I think I eat around 2000 but not counting so at a guess. Im size 6 and also trying to gain weight

No your calorie counting doesn't sound that out. What about avocados and eggs? And possibly add some carbs to your evening meal. Would you eat some fruit and yoghurt after meals or does all dairy affect your skin?

1100 is tiny, I struggle to only have 1400 a day (aiming to lose a 1lb a week)

I can easily eat 2500 a day! mmmmmfood

As other poster said, I am dying to know what you eat? Are the snacks 3slices of cucumber or 4 grapes? What is breakfast? Half a grapefruit? I'd probably pass out on my tube journey to work on that little.

To gain weight I'd have butter & honey on my 1 slice of breakfast toast, a protein filled sandwich with yoghurt and apple for lunch then usually something with chicken at night in a sauce with rice and more yoghurt . then fruit.

I was a skinny teen. The only thing that piled the weight on was butter/full fat milk and a LOT of cake. 1 slice of choc cake is massively calorific - I can polish off and have done, half a choc cake no probs when younger/when older & in binge mode. Oh - and cheesecake & rice pudding are massive on calorie scale too. I once counted favourite desserts instead of sheep to get to sleep as the sheep werent doing it: i was still counting (& salivating) at about 100 ...

No idea. I don't count calories but do enjoy a bit of toast in the morning, a sandwich at lunch and a nice tea when I get home. I must admit a few glasses of wine get chucked in the mix too...

I need to put on a bit of weight OP and to do so I consume avocados, cake and ice cream; nuts are good and also don't hold back on the butter and oils. My GP has also prescribed me Ensure drinks which are nutritional drinks like Complan but with 400 cals in them. I find them very easy to drink as the bottles are very small so I don't feel stuffed. You can get lactose-free drinks too.
