To keep asking my 5 year old to repeat what she is saying?

My five year old talks too quickly, too quietly, and never stops. Normally it's random things to do with her toys. I haven't a clue what she is saying most of the time as it is so fast and mumbled. She expects a response from me, should I make her repeat herself until I can understand or just keep nodding my head hoping it's the right response? I feel so bad for her. I can understand her when she asks for a drink etc and when I ask her questions. School have no problem with her speech as far as I know. It's just this constant talking she does all day that I can't make all the words out?

I would ask her to slow down and tell her you can understand her better when she does.

My friends could understand me though because they spoke just as fast.

It is reasonable to ask her to repeat herself. After a while, she will start to articulate herself more clearly in the first place. If you accept the mumbling, she will continue and it will be more difficult to eradicate.

Obviously, when she is playing alone with her toys, let her be, but when she is having a conversation with you (as you say, expecting a response), encourage her to speak clearly and more slowly.

I wouldn't just nod along, because it's not going to help fix the problem. I think asking to repeat herself and polite reminders that she needs to speak louder/more slowly is the way to go.

Ask her to slow down and speak up.

Thanks for the replays. That's great it won't feel bad when I ask her to repeat herself now often it takes 5 attempts before I can understand!
