Or is a dirty oven really that unusual??

I am currently having my oven cleaned by a professional oven cleaner. That is his main job...to clean the ovens of those who cannot be bothered. I will admit my oven is disgusting, I mean really gross, but probably no worse than anyone else who cooks but doesn't have time to clean it. However, upon inspection the man appeared shocked and disgusted!! Not even an act to justify his existence, genuinely shocked. I mean seriously, if your oven is bad enough to call in a pro cleaner, what does he expect? Or do people pay £40 to get thier already clean ovens cleaned? Am IBU or is he??

He is - my oven is scary too, am considering getting professionals in too, I'd think they've seen lots like it.

happygirl87 · 24/07/2015 09:33

Where are you in the country?! If love mine done for £40 but am in London...

mrsdavidbowie · 24/07/2015 09:34

I have oven cleaning man in twice a year and he never recoils.
But I pay him £80 ( London)

mewkins · 24/07/2015 09:34

My oven is filthy even though dh attempted to clean it a few weeks ago (first time in three years!). Who has time to clean an oven?! He should have just got on with it.

SandysMam · 24/07/2015 09:35

Not London I'm afraid!

I once had a builder, who was doing our kitchen extension, comment on the grease and dirt on top of my kitchen cupboards and saying that his wife would never allow it. These were the same cupboards that were due to be ripped out in a weeks time and everything else was clean. I don't pay workmen to point out my housekeeping flaws thanks very much. Angry

Perhaps my builder now does oven cleaning on the side.

IfNotNowThenWhen · 24/07/2015 09:37

I tend to move house rather than clean my oven...

chocolatechip123 · 24/07/2015 09:39

I need mine done. It is absolutely disgusting! Do they use a blowtorch or a small nuclear device?

MyCarHasBrokenDownAgain · 24/07/2015 09:39

Mine was so bad I was way too embarrassed to get a man in Grin. 2 packs of oven pride and a few hours did the trick!

SockQueen · 24/07/2015 09:40

My MiL cleaned our oven before we moved last year, after maybe 3 cleans in 5 years and for that I owe her eternal love and gratitude.

IsItStupid · 24/07/2015 09:40

Well, I can't say YANBU without seeing the oven (it could be truly horrific) but surely he should have put on an act! Or maybe it's a ploy to shame you into hiring him more often!

How long since it was last cleaned?

Mine was more than 11 months ago

SandysMam · 24/07/2015 09:45

Double yours and add some!! Oh the shame!

OP posts:
lottiegarbanzo · 24/07/2015 09:45

I think lots of people probably do hire him to 'super clean' ovens that are not really dirty. He's going to try to persuade you to have yours done more often. Or he's just a rude bugger.

Itscurtainsforyou · 24/07/2015 09:47

I didn't clean my old one. It was a relief when it broke so I could get a nice new clean one Smile

I have just bought a pyro-thingy one that has a self clean function -with an alarm that goes off when it's too dirty - so it's now minimum effort.

MarchLikeAnAnt · 24/07/2015 09:49

dirt on top of my kitchen cupboards

Just put newspaper on top and replace yearly weekly.

My mother has never cleaned an oven - she just buys a new one.

firesidechat · 24/07/2015 09:52

I'm getting one of those when we replace our kitchen curtains. Expensive, but worth it, especially when your oven is in an awkward place like ours.

firesidechat · 24/07/2015 09:53

It's out of site, out of mind in my house March.

firesidechat · 24/07/2015 09:56

Oh blimey. I obviously meant to type sight. I'm not illiterate, promise.

SandysMam · 24/07/2015 09:57

I bet the self cleaning oven doesn't do a mean judgey face!! Grin

MrsDavidBowie have you got a company you recommend?

Imlookingatboats · 24/07/2015 09:58

Tell him you need him to clean it because the last guy who criticised your oven cleaning skills ended up in there...

Birnamwood · 24/07/2015 09:58

I just clean the glass when it gets so bad I can't see what's cooking. 10 mins with one of those magic eraser things and it looks like I've spent hours doing it. Oven appears clean, guests think I'm a domestic goddess, happy days.

mrsdavidbowie · 24/07/2015 09:58

Ovens2new based in Sutton.
Such a lovely man.

Katy3Cats · 24/07/2015 10:01

Sandys I had the exact same thing!

Oven is only 2 years old and has been cleaned twice in that time, admittedly half-arsed so hardly a shocker but the oven cleaning bloke actually starting trying to explain to me how to clean an oven!

Like I was a moron.

alleypalley · 24/07/2015 10:04

£80 to clean an oven. I am tempted. Do they do the whole thing, grill bit and hobs? Does it look practically brand new when they are done, or is it just the main oven bit?
