To come to the cinema alone?

Sidalee7 · 23/07/2015 20:00

Ex has dc's, it's the last night of a film I REALLY want to see, none of my friends want to go out. Am I a sad loser to go alone? I've booked a seat in the back row so no one will sit behind me and pity me!

Go. Cinema is better alone in my opinion. It's not exactly a place for being social?

Pugthug · 23/07/2015 20:02

If only...

Meow75 · 23/07/2015 20:02

I love going to the cinema alone. My biggest problem recently has been that there was nothing that I but not DH wanted to see.

lessthanBeau · 23/07/2015 20:03

I like cinema alone, you don't have to share popcorn or sweets!

Mimigolightly · 23/07/2015 20:04

I love going to the cinema on my own - don't have to share my popcorn Grin

ProcrastinatorGeneral · 23/07/2015 20:05

I used to do it regularly. I don't understand why it's seen as a bit taboo to be fair. Pay money, watch stuff, job done.

Enjoy your film :o

what film?

nothanksbyenow · 23/07/2015 20:07

I'd totally go my own and have done in the past. Even better, there'd be no raised eyebrows at my choice(s) of treats.

AmandaTanen · 23/07/2015 20:08

Pre DC I used to go all the time on my own, I love going to see films, I miss going now, although I take DC to movies for juniors it's not the same.

MillionToOneChances · 23/07/2015 20:08

I often go alone, but rarely on date nights like Friday or Saturday.

Amy106 · 23/07/2015 20:12

I have gone on my own and really enjoy it. No debate over what film, where to sit or what to eat. You are not a sad loser. You are simply taking good care of yourself. Enjoy!

Sidalee7 · 23/07/2015 20:12

Thanks all, my ticket is booked!

Procrastinator - The film is Amy.

Raasay · 23/07/2015 20:13

It's not that uncommon for people to go alone, it's hard to tell who is alone once everyone is seated.

pickingstrawberries · 23/07/2015 20:26

I'm a bit wimpy about doing stuff alone but even I wouldn't care about it at the cinema.

Welshmaenad · 23/07/2015 20:44

I went to see Amy on my own, meant u could properly concentrate, it was brilliant.

Take tissues.

quesadillas · 23/07/2015 20:51

Going to the cinema alone is one of my luxury things to do. Alas don't have much time for it any more!

Fuller123 · 23/07/2015 21:05

I totally love going to the cinema alone and always have...escape from work and kids, me time. Not weird. Empowering. And also a bit of me thinks, if other people are uncomfortable with it, they should get a life. Ditto eating alone / having coffee with a good book!

Lagoonablue · 23/07/2015 21:06

Not a loser at all. I do it all the time.

WorraLiberty · 23/07/2015 21:08

Is it just me who thinks HQ should put a sticky thread at the top of the page, saying 'MNetters, it's ok to go to the cinema alone'? Grin

YANBU

Enjoy it OP

Sidalee7 · 24/07/2015 00:19

Thanks all, would definitely do it again and noticed lots of others alone too!

Amazing film too...

TryToEngageBrainFirst · 24/07/2015 01:18

I think going to some films alone might be awkward. A rom com, for example is the kind of thing people see with others.

Amy is not that kind of film (hope that's not a spoiler!)

And if it were noticed you were alone, you'd be taken for a serious art/film/Amy fan, and not some sad loser.

But most people won't notice, and any who do will (possibly wrongly) think "look at that cool woman who's comfortable enough with her own company and empowered enough to do things on her own". Everyone thinks that other people are more cool/sorted than we are!

It's a fabulous/interesting film, and it's haunted me since I saw it 2 weeks ago. Do come back and do another post about what you thought of it!

velourvoyageur · 24/07/2015 03:47

I do this as often as I can - maybe twice a week! Have a pint in the pub beforehand or a glass of wine in the cinema bar.

It never occurred to me that people might find it sad before MN but then I'm a bit too lonerish it's true.

ScrambledEggAndToast · 24/07/2015 06:43

No problem OP. I've done it at least 3 times. When I went to see the first Hunger Games, it was during the day and I got the screening to myself. Ideal Grin

girlinoz · 24/07/2015 06:46

Currently sat outside the cinema waiting to do just this (late afternoon here), going to see Trainwreck. Haven't had any funny looks just yet, debating what particular treat to purchase .........Grin

BitOutOfPractice · 24/07/2015 06:53

One of the many many things I loved about being single, the cinema alone. Bliss.

TerrorAustralis · 24/07/2015 06:58

I love it. Haven't done it for ages though. I think you've inspired me to see what's on.
