To Give up NEWS for 1 month.

Inspired by another thread and particularly by having read the following

dobelli.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Avoid_News_Part1_TEXT.pdf

It shocked me how my mind kept wandering and it was difficult to read to the end (we are so used to 'snippets of crap' and have lost the ability to concentrate on longer articles) but it's well worth a read.

Anybody else up for it?

I once thought I would give up news for a month. But I never got round to doing it. This has been a summer of very sad national stories. Good news hardly gets a look in.

OTheHugeManatee · 04/07/2015 11:01

Normally I'd say yes, but I'm glued to the Greek financial crisis at the moment Smile

Good article. Though I'm not sure about the idea of giving up news but carrying on MNing, as most of the criticisms in the piece that apply to news also apply to MN.

wallypops · 04/07/2015 14:58

I live abroad and don't watch tv. I used to listen to radio4 LW but it no longer works properly. National radio here is bollocks so I now only listen to podcasts. The only world news choice I have on my list of podcasts is "from our own correspondent" so rarely news like.

Honestly life is so much more peaceful without the news.

I was never a news fan having been traumatized by Newsround as a 5 year old.

bumbleymummy · 04/07/2015 16:10

Yanbu. Although I agree that by the same logic you should give up MN as well.

WellErrr · 04/07/2015 16:24

I gave up the news over a year ago. I haven't a scooby what's going on in the wide world. Which is fine by me, much happier for it.

WellErrr · 04/07/2015 16:24

I only see the news that I happen across here

SlightlyUnhingedTapps · 04/07/2015 16:47

My husband does this sporadically for a week or so. He finds he has a more positive outlook when he does and it's less distracting. However do we have to give up Le Tour and Wimbledon too? If not I'm up for it.

whothehellknows · 04/07/2015 18:14

What WellErr said-- I only know about what happens to be discussed on here. I feel like most of the news is so spun that it's just a mass manipulation of the public... Like I'd rather not hear what they want me to.

I've just found myself (automatically) reading the mail on Saturday Blush

I'm going to start tomorrow now.
This may be tougher than I thought!
