To think that actually, it is hot

AIBU to think that just because other countries get hotter than Britain, does not mean being here during heatwaves is lovely and fun? We don't have the infrastructure for heat - see the trains going slowly to prevent buckling, total lack of air conditioning in most homes - and we aren't 'culturally' prepared for it - look at all the threads about schools who expect children to be out for significant lengths of time during the hottest parts of the day.

I grew up somewhere with average summer temps of 105 degrees - and it was fine because the infrastructure was there and everyone knew how to keep themselves cool.

So basically, AIBU to think that it doesn't matter that other places are also hot, it's hot here now and it's bloody annoying and getting in the way of normal life!

YANBU. DCs school had sports day yesterday. 2 children threw up after the 400m race, one passed out whilst just sat waiting and one of my DC has been awake with a headache all night even after drinking plenty of water and wearing a cap.

YANBU. I used to live in Madrid, much much hotter in the summer than here. However everywhere was air conditioned, people slept for 2-3 hours in the hottest part of the day, kept completely different hours etc etc. England is miserable in the heat.

Schools really should be more prepared for heat waves. I work in a school and allowing kids outside to play at lunchtime during the midday sun without hats or checking if they are wearing any sun protection is just absurd. Yesterday they all came in gasping for a drink and we had to line them to get them a drink of water, ridiculous.

I can't believe a school had sorts day yesterday! Shoul have been rearranged surely?!

YANBU. And people who love the heat just can't understand people who don't. I love rain but I don't go all 'FFS' when people complain about it!

I've been vacuuming cars in this heat, I've never been so sweaty in all my life! We're definitely not geared up for it and it is hard going! Glad of a day off today!

I agree. The UK isn't set up for heat as we get so little of it. Up to about 23/24 degrees is lovely but into the 30's is not.

Carpeted houses, for instance, are very rare in hot climates. My feet on my wool carpet last night felt like walking on hot coals!

The UK is simply not set up to be prepared for any extreme weather conditions. Anything between 5-25 degrees Celsius is fine. Below and above, the cracks begin to show.

I love the sunny days, but it is just so bloody muggy. Our bodies aren't used to it and my house is like a green house.

We get shit cold depressing weather most of the year so it's lovely to feel the sun.

It was 30c in our workplace at 6am this morning, now its 34c (9am) so YANBU. It makes us all grouchy, sweaty lethargic messes. Anything above 25c is a living hell when you have a manual full on job.

Work is fine in the heat, nice air-conditioned office and it's not like I have to wear PPE or anything like that. Hubby's work has a "stand-down if it goes over 30c" policy so he (civil engineer) will be home at lunchtime today, most likely.

Mornings and evenings are fine - I'll go for a lovely outdoor swim after work and then sit out in the sun :D

It's the commute that's the problem. The Northern line was a special kind of disgusting this morning and it's only going to get worse later.

I said the same to DH yesterady, we're just not set up for this weather (so it's a good job we only get it for about 3 days a year!)

Yesterday was a bit of a write-off in school, kids were too hot to learn anything, 32 sweaty teens sat in a small room with no opening windows is no fun at all.

Yesterday was the first time I was glad of having a north facing house. I opened the front door and it was so wonderful and cool inside. Normally I'm shivering!

My 2 have sports day today, I expected it to be cancelled. But no, we are all going to stand in the sun on a field with no shade watching children in the midday sun running about.
I know it's been organised for weeks and parents have taken time off but come on, it's ludicrous.

WE should stop complaining because YOU love the heat?

Mama take umbrellas for shade and your own water and fruit for your kids and tell them in this heat getting to the start line is plenty of effort in its self.
We've not got above 25 yet but that's plenty with a toddler and baby.
I just hate all the sunscreen applying!

I am working g from hone today and wafting around looking languid. I never sit in the sun anyway and this oppressive heat is dreadful...pollution will be terrible.
