To think they should have phoned rather than emailed?

dd has choir on a Wednesday startiinng at 5pm a 20 minute walk from school. I leave her in after school care until just after 4.30 then pick her up and walk her to choir.

Today we arrived to find about 12 children waiting and a locked venue. Nobody there. At 5.10 another parent phoned up and got no answer and at 5.20 we gave up and went home.

I've just received an email timed 3.15pm saying that tonights rehearsal is cancelled as the singing teacher is attending a family event.

AIBU to think that at such short notice they should have phoned us rather than just hoping we'd see an email ?

No, you are not.

The singing teacher was too cowardly to call and ducked out by sending an e-mail.

How annoying. Email if it's a day or so before but at that late notice a text would have been more sensible.

And unless it's a cover story for something else, surely family events aren't a last minute thing??

I'd be pretty cross about this. I agree it was a cop out. I'd be having a word OP.

Family event could be a funeral.

We get texts. I think that's fine.

If it was some kind of family tragic emergency then I can see why 12 plus calls wasn't practical but I agree with pp that a text would have been better as more likely to have been seen in time.

Yanbu. A call or text surely. Not everyone checks their emails that regularly, as demonstrated by the 12 kids waiting outside who's parents obviously didn't!

Depends on what has really happened. If, for example, a close relative/friend ahs died today she might not be able to phone round. And doesn't necessarily have anyone to do it for her. likewise, if she's with someone who is ill or is suddenly ill herself, she might manage to put round a group email but not be able to phone everyone. You might get more info later. I suppose for the future a phone tree might work.

I think everyone assumes everyone has a smart phone. I've missed emails before because I don't have a smartphone, nor do I have access to email at work

... and yes, it was probably an emergency
