to not have a clue about paint colours

Hi there, need help please. Moving into my new house in couple weeks, husband is currently painting in the house. I am bit clueless and also colourblind. He needs me to get paint for bedroom asap . Went up today to woodies to have a look at paints and ended up more confused with all the different colours. The bedroom is quite big, high ceiling and south facing. Was thinking of just painting it cream and maybe darker cream behind the bed. Can anyone just give me names of two cream paints that could work well together. I'm honestly losing the will to live here! :(

Is your DH colourblind too? I can't work out why he would leave the choosing of paint colours to you otherwise.

Assuming he isn't, get yourself a paint chart and get him to select the colours with you. Then you go to the shop and get them.

You could play it safe and buy loads of white and then do behind the bed magnolia. Then all you're looking for is 'white' and 'magnolia'. I've done a similar thing in my hall and it looks really nice, bright and airy.

Thank you awombwithaview I might try that. ooermissus you are very kind to be so concerned about me and my husband, to answer yiur question no he is not colour blind, spending every spare minute down in the house trying to paint and plaster and basically make the house liveable for all of us. We have to leave our current house in less than two weeks so a lot of stress and panic from everyone so least I can do to help out is actually pick up.some paint. . I asked a simple question about any nice cream paint not advice on my marriage!Smile

Go to B&Q and get large tins of White, Magnolia and light green. Buy a smaller tin of coffee-brown also.

Also buy large mixing trays because you can mix your own paint from those colours.

2 walls in Magnolia, off-set with 2 walls in a 'hint of green' and a white ceiling is stunning! I suggest the coffee colour in case you prefer a deeper magnolia.

Make sure you mix enough paint of the colour you want on your wall(s). You can't get the same colour-match again if you are mixing your own colours.

Failing that - do all walls in Magnolia and ceilings in white and sort your colours out when you get there! (That's how the big building companies set up their houses for 1st time sale)

You could try using Encycolorpedia for good mixes - click on the options in the grey box in the right - you can search by maker too.

Johnstone's Antique White is a nice 'warm' white, you could perhaps try that on its own, and use brilliant white on the ceiling and down to the picture rail (if you have one).

Painted my bedroom walls in Natural Calico (Dulux) and the ceiling and paintwork in white. Looks fresh and clean and I can use my collection of coloured/patterned duvet covers without it clashing.

Have you got colortrend paint over there? If so get any of those colours, they are all good in particular a colour called goya which seems to look great everywhere.

Do not buy b and q paint. Buy cheap and you will buy twice.

Don't get magnolia it has a horrible pink tinge. Classic cream from crown is all over out house. It is a lovely neutral cream ( with no pink). For a slightly darker cream we used natural hessian from dulux.

I second Natural Hessian as well. Dulux do a feature wall paint and show which colour goes with it (idiot proof, saved me from making an expensive mistake). Have used Redcurrant Glory with Natural Hessian in one room and Urban Obsession with Natural Calico in the other (dining room and living room), had loads of compliments.

I cheated/was inspired by which shades went with which on the F&B website. Then, I colour matched with Leyland/Johnstone's trade paints.

I always have all walls in the house white. Including kitchen and bathroom. Rooms look bright and airy; any furniture or curtain goes with it. No issues with mixing, even mixing trays, brushes etc. can be used in all rooms.

I painted my entire house white when I moved in. Really easy, I did it for speed and cheapness - but it looked stunning, really enhanced the space I had. I kept most of the rooms that way (10 years later) as I liked the effect so much, you can change rooms as you get a feel for living there. Most of my house is still white apart from sitting room which is now grey and family room which is beigey.

Dulux Natural Calico is a lovely warm creamy/not quite white tone.

Dublinlass, very late to this thread so hope you got sorted out with colours? I have to say I left mumsnet because I was bored of reading snidey, sarcastic comments of the few- (who give mumsnet a bad name), who just cannot bloody help themselves with large doses of sarcasm. I don't think formerdiva that Dublinlass was being shirty or anything like. Infact I applaud her restraint and also her polite response towards ooerrmissus who undoubtedly was being sarcastic. Dublinlass asked a question. Sadly, as is usually the case someone was quick off the mark with an answer of no help whatsoever. God i'm so bored of these ""ladies"" who read questions/replies and just cannot help themselves. Girls come on, as my much loved late mama used to say, if you can't say anything nice..... shut the f**k up. Oh no sorry, that was me!

Dublinlass I'm sure UK mumsnetters are wondering about woodies.
I'm a Dublin lass too so I know where you mean Smile
Are you near Stillorgan Decor- my d sis lives nearby and says they are great for paint.
There is a specialist paint place too over near Home Store and More in Nutgrove.
I love Dulux Jasmine White.- it's a lovely pale cream colour.
My DH couldn't care less what colour it was painted as long as he didn't HATE it and I made a decision Smile

Whack some Dulux Timeless on. It's bright, fresh but not at all cold. You can add some colour when you're more settled and have lived in your house a bit.
