To be surprised at this woman's rudeness?

I was shopping yesterday. DC3 was in the baby seat in the trolley DC2(5) was holding the trolley and DC1(7) was walking next to us. No one was running or messing about. We walked to the baby change with the trolley, it's fairly narrow but easy enough for two trolleys to pass each other. My trolley had a bit of a mind of its own and with the baby in was heavy and a bit difficult to steer.

A woman walked towards us, directly at us in fact and made no attempt to move (she didn't have a trolley or anything). I tried to steer out of her way but when she got level with my five year old she said to him"get out the fucking way then"! I was so shocked that I just looked at DC1 like Shock. She pushed past us and we carried on.

I'm under no illusions that occasionally my DC can get in the way or become slightly rowdy, however they were being well behaved and holding the trolley/walking at the side.

I said to DC1 that I couldn't believe how rude she had been and he said "maybe she's a nice lady usually but she's just having a bad day". I wish I had his optimism.

NYANBU maybe she'd just nicked stuff in the toilets and didn't want to get caught, or whatever .Doesn't excuse that rudeness but might explain it.

Yeah maybe. I couldn't believe anyone would speak that why to a five year old though and it was definitely too him rather than me. Just rudeness.

I think I'd have marched after her and ripped a chunk out of her. I have very low patience with people like that.

I was very proud of him yes. DC1 is quite sensitive and I think she'd have upset him if it was aimed his way.

I know you shouldn't judge people on appearance but she was 50's/60's and quite well dressed. Sort of reminded me a bit of my mum. And then she came out with that! We had a nice chat with the DCs about talking nicely to people so something good came out of it.

yanbu. someone once said similar to my elderly mum! i hissed that she was welcome to get in my fucking way outside and she quickly made a grovelling apology. no doubt terrified of all 5ft nothing of me Grin

Rude cow. I don't care what anyone is going through in their life, you don't talk to a stranger just going about their business like that.. Your sons response was so grown up and mature bless him!

I didn't because it was completely unexpected. Also I'm really quite shy and felt a bit intimidated. It was one of those situations where you think up a great response after.

There is no response to that unless you fancy getting stabbed. And I'm not easy to intimidate.

All you can do is rise above it, which your dc1 managed rather admirably Smile

Honestly your never prepared for these types of event. A nutcase had a go at me not long ago, I was so surprised I could barely speak.

No sounds like a rude and nasty person, why does mental health issues always feature in threads where the offender is downright nasty. Some people are just plain nasty.

So you'd just put your head down if someone spoke aggressively like that to you, through fear of being stabbed?!
If she'd have done the same to my child, I wouldn't have let it go I'm afraid, but I understand some being reluctant to.
Just never occurred to me that the reluctance was in case you were stabbed Confused

Your dc is absolutely lovely, its embarrassing for her that a young child can be so mature.
