I've began training in my new job and it's a very large company and they have a customer service team who take all the calls.

In training it's come up a few times about the types of query they would deal with and one guy in our group keeps referring to them as "phone monkeys"

I don't know why but it's pisses me off each time he says it. It just seems so derogatory and dismissive.

Am I being silly and this is a normal phrase?

Correct him every time with 'Do you mean the customer services team?' Until he gets the hint.

How about the phone monkeys all leave and go somewhere that they are respected and let's see how long the business lasts??? Thankfully the place where I work hold our customer service team with total respect- without them doing a stellar job on the front line there is no point to anyone else's job! Clearly I feel your colleague is BU

It is derogatory and dismissive. To describe any human being as a 'monkey', is awful. Pull him up every time he uses the phrase, hopefully he'll stop.

YANBU but I don't like the way people call charity pushers "Chuggers" they're just people trying to earn a living.
