To be fed up with society's expectations

I really hate society's expectations of young twenty somethings. "Shag and drink your way through uni". Why do we have to do these things to be accepted as 'normal' by others who do these things? Fuck that.

I don't think anyone will hate you if you remain a virgin who doesn't drink alcohol whether you go to Uni or not.

Really? There are different groups within uni. Eg if you join the CU you won't get that! Similarly groups like orienteering etc are a bit more geeky but if you do rag raids (charity booze ups) then yes you will get that.

You sound as though you've got in with a group of friends who want to shag and drink their way through Uni - find a different group of friends, it's called growing up. Don't blame 'society' (whatever that is - the Daily Fail doesn't count BTW).

I'm still a virgin at 24 - but that is probably because of my depression/anxiety/agoraphobia issues throughout my teens.

Is that society's expectations? I didnt get that memo.

I'm 26 and I didn't do that- I'm relatively normal.

In my group of friends if someone 'shagged and drank' their way through uni it would be considered abnormal!

Your world is very different to mine. I never felt that I needed to sleep around and be drunk to be normal.

Someone just mentioned it on another thread and it just made me annoyed.

I was a student living near Uni and didn't sleep around, never felt pressure to either! There were all kinds of different people doing different things.

Don't know what the OP is talking about. I went through university with good friends; going surfing in the evenings, going for hikes/runs/bike rides and playing cricket/hockey/rugby. If we did drink it was normally a garden party at someone's house. We quite often studied together at each others places and in the library. It sounds like you are in with a group of bogans and need to look around you to meet different people.

I was at uni a long time ago - I'm 39 - and I felt like that was the expectation as well. One woman had a go at me at a party for not being willing to drink more. I walked out. Then I found other friends. Unis are huge places. I know times have changed but there's got to be people who aren't doing that, surely? I know a couple of students and they aren't - though one of them tells me he gets teased for not drinking a lot, he has made friends.

Yes - I missed out on that experience. I studied quite a bit and went to bed early - well 11pm.

I don't drink much and don't like getting drunk.

Sex - well,that doesn't just happen for some people, does it?
