To be worried about Nick Robinson (Radio 4/News Political Commentator)

... if you are still here you must know who I mean; I thought he just was hoarse during the election as he was doing so much coverage, but I heard him again this morning and he is still hoarse so I am wondering if he isn't well? :-( Hope he is ok.

He is recovering. I think he had throat cancer? It was serious. But he's food now. It's great he's back. You are sweet to care.

Oh gosh, I didn't know that. It wasn't a flippant thread, I genuinely wondered if he was ok. Hopefully he can make a good recovery. If you know him please send him my best wishes, he is one of the cool calm blood-pressure lowering (for me) voices of Radio 4 that gets me through the day.

I also assumed he had talked himself hoarse during the GE. But when I heard him with the same gruff voice again this evening, (on radio 4 evening new), I felt driven to google him ... suspecting it was more than just a sore throat. And that's how I discovered that he had been treated for cancer recently.

I also really hope he will be OK & that his cancer will not return.

Seems like you and I were pretty "in synch" re worrying about Nick Roberston today OP?

Yes, and the presenters on Radio 4 today do sometimes say -0 here is ... who has had surgery for throat cancer - I heard that a few times or they otherwise make it clear in advance why he sounded a bit strange. I am glad he is keeping going.

On the night of the election he was quite clear that it sounds much worse than it is. He and Huw Edwards (I think it was) had a brief discussion about it. He said it wasn't hurting and that he was following strict Doctors' orders in terms of what he can and can't do. He said he wasn't planning on taking risks with his health or voice. I wish him well for his recovery.

I expect he is taking it easy. Today, the State Opening of Parliament was presented by Huw Edwards (loving every minute) and NR's sidekick, James Landell. Then Norman Smith turned up on the 1pm News.

Thanks all, yes Rice we do seem to be 'in synch' indeed, it was this morning driving in to work that I heard him again and was shocked. I have never heard any discussion about him being 'back' or having been away so that is why I didn't pick up on the fact that he was unwell. Clearly I completely forgot that there is such a thing as Google ... however I am glad I AIBU-ed this as it is a nice little place to express our concern and good wishes for him.

I have a kind of intellectual crush on him - I find him soothing.

Did you know he was in a horrible car accident as a teenager? His best friend and another passenger died, he managed to crawl out of a window or something. Talks about it in his book. Really sad.

Thank you for this thread and the info. I thought the same as Rice when I heard him this morning and remembered how hoarse he had been during the GE. Best wishes to him.
