To be so upset by stories of animal/abuse cruelty?

I'm sure many of you have read the story about a man who drowned his neighbours little dog in a bucket of water because it was barking in the garden. Reading the owners story just now has left me almost in tears, my pets are part of my family and I can't even imagine how devestated I'd be if someone did something like that to them . As annoying as a yapping dog can be I think it takes someone with psycopathic tendencies to do something like that.

Then earlier this week a story appeared on my Facebook about a group of teenage boys who'd tortured and killed a baby deer and filmed it on a mobile phone. What kind of sick fucks do something like that?

It makes me feel genuine distress when I read these stories. I know some will say they are just animals, but it just upsets me so much I could cry.

YANBU to be upset by this. I find a lot of what humans are capable of upsetting.

But these are the ones that get into the news, there are many 1000s that don't but still go on

I watched that "The Dog Factory" on BBC last week. It was harrowing but nothing I hadn't seen before , it's gone on for decades. Unfortunately 1:3 puppies are from the Puppy Farm background (and there's BYB as well)

On Gumtree , I get incensed by the number of people "getting rid" or "I just haven't got time for" "kids not interested" "I'm getting a dog" "child has outgrown them" WRT guinea-pigs (which are my particular animal of choice)

It is horrible to see these stories and if they don't report them, they still go on (like dog fighting and baiting).
Unfortunately, I think people get desensitised

A young couple who live near me got a husky/malamute type dog from a local breeder who's since been reported to the RSPCA. He uses his dog (a bitch) as a puppy making machine, and she has litter after litter witout a rest. The dog the couple bought had to be put down because it had something wrong with it due to the mother breeding with a dog she was already closely related to, or something like that. Caused a lot of distress.

There's different levels though IMO- all of them cause pain, distress, cruelty.But the intensity and time span differs.

There's the person who buys "a rabbit for the kiddies" and they ignore it. Poor soul sits all it's life , which might be 10+ years) in a 4' hutch with no company or excercise. That's ignorance and cruelty.

There's the people who 'let their dog have a litter because it's natural' but no thought to the puppies.

The out-and-out cruelty like the deer you mentioned (just why ?)
When I was 8, I saw some boys in my school with a bird on it's nest. Next thing I saw, they'd pulled it limb from limb [sad[ because they could.

And there's a proven link between animal cruelty by children and their behaviour later (like J venables, R thompson and the Devil Brothers to name a couple)

Unfortunately where there's a market (for puppies for example) there will be someone ready to supply. Many people don't want to wait for a reputable breeder to have available puppies.

And a while back there was another of the Dog Farm programmes (IIRC Melinda Messenger) they bought a couple of the puppies (very sick pups)
"There's no way I'm leaving them there" she said.
Great. But it has solved Diddly Squat. As soon as that pup is out the door , there's another to take it's place. That's how these businesses thrive.

No yanbu, and I say this as a person who is not keen on animals. If you have one in your care, it should be looked after properly otherwise what's the point.

You are not being unreasonable. Someone mentioned Danish dog brothels to me the other day, and I did what I would not ecommend anyone doing, I googled it. PLEASE DO NOT GOOGLE IT if you are at all sensitive to animal cruelty. To be honest, two weeks later, and I'm still traumatised by it, and I'm not using the word traumatised lightly.

Animal cruelty like these instances you mention are horrific, and animal abuse is indeed linked strongly with child abuse so all should be reported (as well as its illegal). Unfortunately though the actual level of suffering is far far greater than such one off instances, and the institutionalised acceptance of animal cruelty is often far more shocking. Any look into factory farming for example and the methods used to supply us with milk/meat gives grim reading. I think it is really important to stand up against animal cruelty wherever it may happen as the animals cannot stand up for themselves (eg see this petition against rabbit battery farms) action.ciwf.org.uk/ea-action/action?ea.client.id=119&ea.campaign.id=32239&ea.tracking.id=2d57aea1 There are some really nasty systems in place that the public seem to accept which are horrific to millions of animals, in ways that would be illegal if they were pets.

Yanbu, some of the things I read make me physically sick. U have to be a certain type of vile to torture a defenceless animal (or child).

It seems like these types of abuse r on the rise as well? They r probably not n it's just that more things r being caught/exposed but it feels that way n it really, really angers n saddens me.

You don't realise the scale of it, until you get involved with animal rescue.

A couple of years ago, a local 20 year old woman decided to set up an animal 'rescue' in her back garden. I wanted to help her out when I could, so I popped round one day with some veggies for the animals. She wasn't there, but her dad said that I could go into the garden. When I saw the animals, I was shocked to the core. This apparent animal lover, had in fact abandoned over 100 caged animals in the garden. They were starving, dehydrated, over crowded, and some were sadly dead. The were standing in inches of their own waste. I immediately got help from my dm and bf. We removed the bodies, fed the animals, gave them water and cleaned the cages. I got in touch with the owner, and she had had some sort of break down. I didn't dare call the RSPCA at first, as I thought that they'd just put all of the animals down. When we did call them, they didn't come out. We cared for the animals for several weeks, with the owner never returning. I had to take a rabbit to the vets, as she had myxi. :( Luckily, we managed to get in touch with an entire network of small animal rescues, and the Rabbit welfare charity funded all of the bunny vaccinations and neutering. The animals had been breeding, so the rescues had even more to cope with. I'd never seen anything so shocking, it was like a hell hole. I'm forever grateful to all of the animal rescuers who helped us.

I find cruelty / neglect of animals so upsetting I can't even read the other posts here.

I will probably get slated for this but it upsets me more than other evils/injustices/terrible things that happen.

My dds rescued a rabbit from our neighbours, no food or water again, they just hoped it would die so they wouldn't have to bother.

I know this sounds rather like that YouTube video of the lady crying and saying she wants every cat to be looked after, but I end up feeling a really strong almost maternal urge to care and nurture any animal! If it was physically possible I would love and care for every poor little soul that deserves a better life, but you can only do so much.

I hate the thought of any kind of animal cruelty and abuse they have no voices so we need to be there for all animals treat them as we would want to be treated with respect care love we have no right to treat them as we do or should I say the vast majority of sick evil people I say people but they are not even human how can they be I'm disgusted and appalled and angry that they think they have the right to abuse animals and unfortunately they get away with it it's about time this was made into an eye for an eye as doing what they do amounts to the same as murder how would they feel being tied to a tree with no food or water locked in a cage no food water and made to lay in their own waste surrounded by dead bodies I can only wish this for them if I could I would make this the law for any animal murdering sick vile scum animals were put on this earth which by the way we do not own by someone who put us in charge of caring for his animals we are their guardians we do not own them they have as much right to life as we do if not more we don't deserve animals or their love they are always there for us and look how they are treated like nothing throw away disposable objects I despair at the human race how did they become so humans are the evil plague of the earth I'm an animal right person animal advocate and we should all keep fighting for animal rights they live they feel they suffer at the hands of evil not 4everyone there are good people who think as I do Until Every Cage Is Empty ALF fight for animal rights and liberation
