It's been with the manufacturer for repair for a week. They are being vague about when it will be back.

My family arrive on Friday for a rare visit. I'm not a mad obsessive cleaner at all but I want the place to look nice and be welcoming for them.

I've been trying to keep on top of things (2 DCs, one hairy dog) with a dustpan and brush, flash wipes and bleach but the dirt is winning.

I want to get stuck in and clean right now but DS who is not well is clinging to me like a limpet, pretty much hasn't stopped breastfeeding for the last 24 hours and has just bitten my nipple.

I can see fucking dog hairs everywhere Angry Angry . Oh and when I did go to make a start in the hall a fucking great big spider jumped out at me. I'm doomed aren't I.

Can you borrow a vacuum from a friend or neighbour?

CadleCrap · 20/05/2015 11:23

Can you borrow one from your neighbour?

Yanbu - you are doomed with a huge spider in the house.

DayLillie · 20/05/2015 11:31

Tidy up, make a nice chocolate cake for your visitors, and ask them to bring their vacuum cleaner with them Grin

NomiMalone · 20/05/2015 11:35

Thanks all.

Don't know neighbours well enough to ask. Plus they've been a bit odd in the past so would rather not.

Would ask my family but they're flying with hand baggage only so a Henry might be a bit of a squeeze [gri Grin .

DS has finally gone down so I'm blitzing like a loon.

I'm sure your family won't even notice, they'll just be happy to see you and the DCs. Flowers

ThomasRichard · 20/05/2015 11:38

Ask a friend to borrow theirs? I'd be more than happy to help out in this situation.

Pispcina · 20/05/2015 11:38

Where are you love? I have a spare and I love hovering.

Autocorrect just changed that to hovering from hoovering but I'm going to let it Grin

Lolimax · 20/05/2015 11:40

Tell us kinda where in the country you are I bet someone is near enough to lend you a Hoover.

Koalafications · 20/05/2015 11:41

YANBU. The big hairy one would have reduced me to tears alone.

kissmethere · 20/05/2015 12:00

Do you know any other parents who could oblige? All that sweeping would do me in. I love the dusting attachment on my hoover it makes such an easier slog of the chore.

ChucksAhoy · 20/05/2015 12:00

Wet rubber gloves for the dog hair? Not practical for the whole house admittedly but perhaps just for getting the worst off

Icimoi · 20/05/2015 12:04

This may well be a very stupid idea, but is it worth considering buying something cheap and cheerful? That way you'd have a spare, or maybe one for upstairs and one for downstairs.

PHANTOMnamechanger · 20/05/2015 12:04

Have you tried freecycle or your local facebook "free to a good home" page?

Or could you afford, as a one off, to get a cleaner to come to you for a couple of hours?

Allinson2014 · 20/05/2015 13:13

If you're local you can use mine. I have a black Labrador and I'm well aware of the fur everywhere!

MagelanicClouds · 20/05/2015 14:38

I have an upright dyson that is going spare. Dh wont let me get rid of it as he seems to have developed some sort of emotional attachment to it. Still, its good with pet hair.
I just find it too heavy to use and it scares the crap out of my cat. Ironically its now sat in a corner gathering dust and could probably do with a vacuum before its use!

ChucksAhoy · 21/05/2015 17:11

Ooh my dh is seriously attached to our Dyson too! Bloody thing is falling apart - doesn't have any of the original attachments but that doesn't matter as the hose has fallen off. I don't understand it at all! Smile

TheFairyCaravan · 21/05/2015 17:16

I can't Hoover and was getting frustrated with the mess when DH or the kids couldn't do it quick enough in the week. I looked to buy a carpet sweeper but found a really cheap Bissell rechargeable Hoover in the sale. It's really, really good. Could you get something like that?

SylvaniansKeepGettingHoovered · 21/05/2015 17:28

Could you buy a cheap hand-held vacuum, the cordless ones?
