AIBU to not want to pay twice?

First world problem here.....but this is it....I got a bathroom fitted recently. I initially chose a coloured bath panel that matched a cupboard, but (before it was fitted) asked to swap it for a white one. But now I've got the bill, they have charged for both, and when I query it, it is apparently because they had to buy it twice.
AIBU to think they could/should return the unwanted one for - say - an admin fee? We don't actually have the item - the fitters took it back.
Can I insist?

Can you insist on taking possession of the unwanted bath panel? I would (assuming that pursuing a refund isn't going to work).

They are probably not confident that they can sell the coloured one, nor get a refund from the supplier. And they may not be able to afford a loss because you changed your mind after they'd followed your initial instructions.

Can you ask for the unused panel and sell it yourself?

Glossybum · 15/05/2015 15:00

I wouldn't pay twice. Why would you? That's ridiculous.

( unless they made it clear at the time of changing your mind in which case you may have not changed your mind? )

And I would ask for them to get the bath panel to me before I would pay for it.

I would definately request the spare panel - you have paid for it after all.

WinterIsGoing · 15/05/2015 15:05

if you dont have the spare panel, then dont pay for it - if they insist you pay for it - make sure they give it to you

grumpysquash · 15/05/2015 15:10

Hi OP here. I meant insist on not paying twice for the panel. It was an outrageous sum of money for what is basically a bit of plastic and I don't think it would have much re-sale value (anyone want to buy it? LOL)
I agree that I should insist on getting it if I am paying for it; but can I push not paying twice, or am I stuck with it?
[I asked for an 'exchange' and they didn't say anything about re-purchasing at the time, so I thought it would be a straight swap, like in a shop]

I'd argue it due to the fact at the time they should have said 'okay grumpy we can give you a white one, however, this will mean you are charged twice because we cannot reuse the one already ordered' then left the final decision with you. That's what we do in myindustry and if a customer changes their mind we generally charge a 25% restock fee

Mitzimaybe · 15/05/2015 15:36

If you asked to change the coloured panel for a white one, and they agreed without saying "It's already ordered so you'll still have to pay for it, plus the new one" then no, you shouldn't have to pay for both.

If they'd told you at the time, would you have stuck with the coloured one? If you wouldn't have had the white one had you known about the double cost, then tell them that. I think they're in the wrong - you should have been told how much your change of mind would cost you, and be given the option.
