To ask if your babies did this?

Looking for a bit of advice from mums here.

My 4 week old has just started sticking one leg in the air, having a good look at it and moving it around, and I noticed it was always the same leg. I've just tried to pull her other leg straight, and she fights against it, I can eventually hold the other leg out straight but it will ping straight back into bent position as soon as I stop.

Should I be worried and see a doc, or is it just normal development to favour one leg so young?

Obivously I'm not seeking clinical advice, just wondering if any mums have experienced the same.

My ds1 did a similar thing with his left arm very early on, but he's very left handed. I don't think it sounds like anything to worry about, but mention it at the six week check if you're still concerned.
Neither of mine liked me trying to straighten their legs.

monkeymamma · 11/05/2015 09:40

my babies didn't, but I do remember them favouring a 'side' they liked to look at/turn to so what you describe doesn't sound too strange. She's very young and bear in mind they get used to being in a certain position in the womb, she's not been long 'on the outside' so may just be following patterns from before...

Quills · 11/05/2015 09:41

Honestly, I wouldn't worry at this stage. By all means mention it at baby's 6-8 week development check if it's a concern, but I genuinely wouldn't expect it to mean anything troublesome. The GP/HV can check things like the creases on the legs (whether or not they're the same), range of movement in the hip joints etc. In the meantime, though, unless you've got history of hip dysplasia in the family, I'd put it to the back of your mind until then.

Yep, ds obsessed with right leg for quite some time. I think he'll be right-handed.

CoffeeAndBiscuitsPlease · 11/05/2015 09:42

EDIT EDIT EDIT! SHE IS 4 MONTHS OLD!!!!! I'm too tired :( lol

Does it click when you rotate it? Take her to the GP just to set your mind at rest.

CoffeeAndBiscuitsPlease · 11/05/2015 09:45

Not that I can tell, she's had her 8 week checkup but she wasn't doing it then. But she did have one shakey leg!n they booked her in for bloody tests for being "jittery" but she never had them as it went away. Now the same leg is sticking out

Four months?
Ds2 has been obsessed with his feet from before that age. Regularly used to sit in his bouncer with both legs flung up in the air like a loon.
Unless she seems to be in pain I would be too concerned. I'd be more worried if she couldn't bend her leg very well.

MrsNextDoor · 11/05/2015 09:47

So the shaky leg is the one she extends?

CoffeeAndBiscuitsPlease · 11/05/2015 09:47

MagelanicClouds

Yes 4 months, but only one leg she uses is interested in,no bending problems as I said, she won't straighten one out at all.

I don't remember any of my 4 doing this. Can you take her to her Dr for a medical opinion? I think it's best to have it looked at now, and if it's nothing it will put your mind at ease. Also don't be scared to get a second opinion later on if you don't feel right about it.

CoffeeAndBiscuitsPlease · 11/05/2015 09:57

Ok thanks :)

By all means, have a chat with your HV about it, but it does sound like she's just not 'discovered' the other one yet Smile. I got some foot-finder socks for my DD at about that age. She discovered the other in no time.

I agree with other posters, it probably is nothing, but might be worth getting checked out. Does she move that leg at all without you moving it or is it usually pulled up all the time?
I ask as my ds had septic arthritis (infected hip joint) when he was three weeks old and I have a colleague who's dd had the same thing at 7 months. It's worth checking out just in case. Does she have a temp, that can be sign of infection.

We ended up in a and e but with a three week old all the docs were being super careful (and I'm glad they were!)
Not trying to worry, but thought it was worth sharing our experience.

BlacknWhitePanda · 11/05/2015 10:40

Ds did it, in fact i have a home video of him lifting the one leg up, looking at it then moving it.
I mentioned it at his check just to be sure but he was fine. He soon found the other and now at 4 months its still all about the feet

TheCowThatLaughs · 11/05/2015 10:53

My ds only turned his head to the left at that age, I think maybe I did take him to the gp just to make sure nothing was wrong. He eventually started looking to the right too, and has had no problems Smile
