It has been so poignant and moving. It is sad too to see Nick Clegg and Ed Miliband there having been through so much during the last 24 hours.

To be honest, I'm sad that a day which should be one of unified remembrance and solidarity marred by the inevitable toxicity of democratic politics. But I guess that was what was being fought for.

I see nothing unreasonable in tears for those who sacrificed so much to free Europe.

Perfectly acceptable and normal.

There was a General Election in July 1945 and of course Churchill lost. He was attending the Potsdam conference with Stalin and Truman to decide what to do about Germany after the surrender (70 years ago today). Attlee was there too as his deputy but when the General Election result came through Churchill went home and didn't come back. Democracy in action and that is indeed what we were fighting for. (Stalin wasn't, of course.)
